pausing a program on tv

How long can a pause a program on tv? When I pause a movie I'm watching and come back half an hour later, the movie is gone and whatever is on the channel at the time is playing.

If you are watching OnDemand, it will usually cancel it after a few minutes.

For a DVR, it depends on the channel and it's datarate, and even what type of DVR you have (X1 or non-X1). For non-X1, the buffer can be as little as 15 minutes for full-bandwidth MPEG2 (very rare now), to nearly 2 hours for the more common, hyper-compressed MPEG4 channels. When your pause hits the 'end' of the buffer, it will unpause and start playing.
