mydvr only shows the channel number.At no time does it show the time of day.  I have rebooted the dvr and still have the same problem.  What is the solution to this problem?

Go into the Setup menu and go to the Cable Box setup. There is a setting for either the Channel or Time showing on the front display. It may be set for Channel.
