Im trying to activate my comcast cable but the x1 box just says cast and my tv won't go beyond the "welcome connecting to your entertainment experience" Do i need to be connected to the modem to get my tv to work?

No.  Try unplugging and plugging in the STB.  Which make model do you have?

How sure are you that you have a live cable signal?
