Bet there's a story there. It might still work, if you dry it out thoroughly. Maybe bury it in rice for a day or two; that's worked with laptops, so it might work for a remote.
Open up the battery compartment, remove the batteries, and try to shake out as much water as possible. Also, look how clean it is. If the remote doesn't work properly after drying, try washing it in DISTILLED water to remove all traces of soap.You can also try some compressed air (or the canned air stuff) to try and blow it out, too.
