I used to be able to access my email by clicking on the mail icon.  That no longer works.  Message says "Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed."  Is this a correct problem, and if so, how do I resolve this ssue?

What icon are you referring to?  Are you using only the Comcast webmail interface with a browser, or a desktop email client like Outlook or Thunderbird?
