Using a VPN (in my case Express VPN) on my home router with comcast and sending email

If this is a duplication or posted in the wrong place - please forgive me.  I am not used to posting.

I do, however, have a burning question that needs an answer.  A few days ago I put into place a Linksys router (WRT-3200ACM) and flashed it with Express VPN software.  Since then I can't send email using the Comcast email server.  I can receive email.  I contacted Express VPN tech support and was told to look at the ports (which I did).  SMTP is set to 587 (I even tried 465) but it doesn't make any difference and IMAP is set to 993.  I turn off the VPN for the device and email sending works.  But turning the VPN off and on is not really desirable.  Which leads me to the million dollar question.

Is there a way to keep the VPN on and still send email through the Comcast router(s) using my email client on my computer?
