Spam folder in the Email account

What is the purpose of the Spam folder that is part of the basic folder group in one's Email account?  I receive occasional Emails that are obviously fishing or robo ads so I mark them spam rather than just deleting them.  They go into the spam folder and seem to just stay there forever.  In the old system they eventually disappeared, but in this new system I've never seen any removed automatically.  Sholdn't Xfinity be getting these back into their system for investigation or something?  If we have to go back and remove them ourselves, we might as well just delete them up front and forget the spam folder all together.
