Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Looks like this is a very common thread on both Netgear and Comcast. My story is pretty much the same as the rest of the posts. Been through 3 different plans now at a gig now only getting 430 down at best in most cases 200mb or under with inconsistent connections. This has been happening across all plan tiers for the last 3 months. Finally had a tech come out after calling in as well as chatting just about every night. He was here to install the Comcast provided modem of course. He confirmed that the CM100 is Gig ready and left with out doing anything. I showed him PDF's of the modem logs I have been taking after each triage step. I was shrugged off with him stating that I would not get gig speed on my laptop or other devices in the house. Showed him the outside box and explained the troubleshooting step I found across these boards over the months. He left. Please Help!!

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

My current config is the modem is on a 5' shielded coax the only other device on the line is the ground lug. I removed the 2 way and filter that was on the modem. “ Along with several other configs. Please see the current signal below. This is after a factory reset and re-provisioning up time around a hr Please see the attached PDF for signals and additinal pdf on first post of event log. Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Your power levels are too high for downstream. I would say to put a -6dB forward path attenuator on it, but I think you need a better technician out there who can actually see your downstreams are a bit too high.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Thank you for the reply I have put a FAM-6 inline at the modem. I factory reset and re-provisioned. I will check the signals in a few hours and re-post. Still not close to gig speed.

Just out of curiosity as well, what is the exact model number of your CM1000? Is it the CM1000-1AZNAS?

What do your upstream power level figures look like now ?

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Hi @NoHFF2104

Your signal levels are fine. See the troubleshooting guide.

First, make sure you are actually on the gig speed tier. Visit https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com to determine your speed tier. After you log into your account, your speed tier will be displayed on the left-hand side of your screen. Alternatively, you can view the speed tier to which you are subscribed here. Sign in and scroll down to the data usage graph area.

Other things to try:

    • Disable your antivirus/firewall briefly and check speeds.
    • Boot your computer into safe mode w/networking and check speeds.
    • Verify that you meet the system requirements.

OT: Also consider installing an ad blocker, your surfing experience will be greatly improved. I'd suggest you do a search for "Ublock Origin".

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Jweaver0312 is a CM1000-100NAS according to the box

EG Please see the attached PDF for the current downstream, upstream signals. Modem has been running for a few hours now with no uncorrected code words with the FAM-6 in line at the modem.

I did confirm I am in the “Gigabit Internet Tier”

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

I would say take that -6dB attenuator out since now even though your downstream are a bit better than they were, your upstreams are now too high and cause more problems then you have now even though you don’t have any downstream uncorrectables.

Have you followed any of the steps that @Nerdburg posted as in the firewall/antivirus, safe mode, or Adblock software?

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

As I figured the upstream power is now too high / out of spec ! You can't use that kind of overall attenuator as it also affects the upstream power (makes it higher). You would need to use a "forward path only" type of attenuator so that it only affects the downstream power and not the upstream.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

They are reporting a outage in the area now.... I will check with the Anti virus when back online for sure. I don't use a ad blocker outside of the Kaspersky Total Security suite. I am getting the same speeds on the PS4 pro also, I don't believe that has any anti virus or add blocking on there.

I will also take the FAM-6 out of the line and reboot the modem. Comcast corp did call after a survey and stated that they would have to look into the fiber part of the line, maybe that's why a outage is in the area. I will update as soon as I can

Appreciate all the help here!

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

I was able to get some speed test done with the anti-virus turned off. They all average around 200 down and 41 up. Out off all this the down speed no matter the plan has been stable.
Here is the forward attenuator I was able to find, seems big in the UK.

Just for the sake of it I also ran a puma 6 test that looks to be near perfect.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

I've asked an employee to check the CMTS for real-time and historical RF signal reports from your modem. They can also check your local node/plant for any degradation or error reports. You can expect a reply in this thread.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Thank you so much The_Janitor
I do have a small update. After sometime on chat today, from what I was told they have a lineman coming out to replace the line from the tap to the house. I did ask if this was a service tech or a lineman. They did say a lineman. I do see a splice in the line but can't fully trace the cable with the sun position at its current state “ Not sure its on my line”
I'm not sure the service stays with the modem, but going over to a friends house that also has Comcast and will see if the modem will spit anything out close to a gig.

The appointment is set for this Saturday 8/11, will be updating the thread once service is performed.

Thanks again for everyone's input here. Been a great deal of help navigating the service and support tiers.

And will look forward to the incoming information the  The_Janitor

Hi NoHFF2104,  was the technician able to come out and correct the issues you were experiencing?  If you still need assistance, please send me a private message with your full name and phone number and I will help review further.

Thank you

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Forgot to update the thread yesterday, by time I got done with Comcast it was around 10:00pm. So they did not change the line from the Tap. The service tech stated that he would put a maintenance request to have the Node checked but no one can see that request. There is a L3 request to have the CMTS checked also. Whatever the tech did yesterday has my upstream screaming right now, So apparently another tech is coming out today. I also have nearly 4000 uncorrectable code words on every channel

ComcastPhil I will PM if todays visit does not produce anything, Im told they will run Fiber to the house but very skeptical on that one.

Channel Lock Status Modulation Channel ID Frequency Power
1 Locked ATDMA 1 17300000 Hz 57.8 dBmV
2 Locked ATDMA 2 23700000 Hz 57.3 dBmV
3 Locked ATDMA 3 30100000 Hz 56.8 dBmV
4 Locked ATDMA 4 36500000 Hz 57.3 dBmV

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

So the third tech came out and was very nice, listened to my concerns and forward the feedback from other chats and this thread. He did not change the line from the tap to the house because it’s a “mid line” but did state that he is calling for a bucket truck. Got high hopes but it’s not going to be today. He also stated that the feed from the tap is RG-56.

So he did test the line and not from the phone app outside of stating your signals stink. I believe it was the JDSU meter. And did see that from the feed it failed and saw “TAP” honestly he kind of was hiding the screen. He installed what he said was a “moca filter”. He also tested the Ethernet cable “cat6”> to modem> modem to street, with a device called xMT2. At first it was showing the same speeds around 200-250 down. Then it moved to 950ish down.. Yet none of the devices in the house could achieve this speed. So im calling a Comcast test device a no

So I will update the thread again in a few days, the maintenance for the Node and CMTS errors are in, so I’m told, Guess that fiber India promised is not going to happen lol. I have attached the signals in pdf
Still reciving the t3 timeouts

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Hmm. That filter doesn't look like it is a MoCA filter. There are similar filters, that looks just like yours, for a couple of my neighbors and I was told they were for blocking some of the noise that they are sending back into the system but one of them was supposedly corrected by a maintenance technician, but the other hasn't been. Have any of your speeds gone up since that visit or the same old?

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

No Sir the speeds do remain the same under 400mb down for sure but replaced all the Ethernet again with Panduit ca6. I did reset the router to factory defaults “Asus AC-3100” and saw a little improvement.  For example that I used today was a PS4 Pro from router and direct to modem. The direct connect was worse than the router.  A I5 7th Gen HP Probook was only seeing 200-300 at the best. I don’t trust the security in wireless so I tend to hardwire everything I can. I did find a Cisco bug on FEAT not sure if its applicable here though.

https://quickview.cloudapps.cisco.com/quickview/bug/CSCva93343

I do have access to AT&T networking  personnel with my job and will see if they have any test tools I can borrow over the coming weeks.

A new TAP line should be installed in the next few days from what I have read RG-56 is a low band line vs RG6 or RG11 Here are the error logs after the reboots today.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Hmm. Have you made sure WMM/QOS Settings are disabled at the time of running speed tests? The bug info you provided would only apply if your CMTS is a Cisco one. A quick way to check would be to take the CMTS-MAC and plug it into a MAC lookup tool.

EDIT: I just pulled it up and found it to be a Cisco CMTS which even though it is, not sure if it was patched up or updated yet, if there is one available.

Something I may have not announced with the tread, Is I am in IT, more a hardware position then an admin position.  But this signal stuff has my head spinning like Beetlejuice.

Outside of the access to the AT&T personnel and my company’s internal engineering department. I do have access to a local inventory around 2 million local to CT. and anything my manger will approve nationwide.
This seems to be a common issue with third party hardware outside of renting one from Comcast. I will find the answers somehow and ask that the thread stay active!

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Just an update to the thread, I have pm ComcastPhil with the new signals and event logs. Still awaiting confirmation with maintenance on the node and repeaters, as well as any L3 for the CMTS

I also talked to a friend that was having issues and she stated they came out as one of the Comcast Business techs and replaced everything today. At the same time another outage in my area was reported for 816 subscribers that her house was not affected. Not to mention the 27,000 affected in New Haven, CT today.

Still awaiting confirmation on node maintenance and a new tap feed, currently here are my signals. The sync timing is off so it is reporting a 1 behind local time.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

So a quick update, I came home to the feed replaced and have had better luck achieving gig service, Up still remains constant around 38-42 // Down is better but still around 300-500 now pending the device.  I did get a few spikes to 600 ish. This also depends on the speed test used. The Xfinity test had the service around well I will post the pic regular not so well. I do have another tech out tomorrow afternoon and still awaiting word on the amps and node.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Update: I had another tech appointment that the “Technical Operations Supervisor”   also attended today. As stated the feed from the tap was replaced yesterday while I was at work. Coming into the neighborhood for my appointment  today I saw maintenance and what I think was at a amp and again at a few TAPs on the main line for around 3 hours..

The service tech confirmed they were indeed working in the area, “finally a response” I started running speed test and they were getting better, I have not hit anything above 600mb but we are getting better.

I explained this to the service tech and also understand from him chatting he was from the “Business Unit” Things started great including the supervisor arrival. I started to get grilled as we tested different devices direct to the modem including the “gig tester”..” This Modem is in bridge mode” People please correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t a modem a bridge? Let’s keep routers and router/modem combos out of the discussion.

Any hoot we talked tech might as well been a fist fight. I stated that the XB6 that they wanted to install but did not have on the truck “all those trucks” has the puma 6 Intel chip that would only cause more issues/

So I went and spent another $201 w/tax on the Arris SB8200. I do like the interface more than Netgear. And for anyone that has made it this far. Arris and Motorola both offer a 2 year warranty vs Netgrear 30 days.. You decide

So here we go

Welcome to the Xfinity Forum. These forums are accessible to all Comcast customers. Membership and Posting privileges are currently available as a free, added benefit to Comcast customers. We invite you to join in and discuss a variety of Service topics/Issues. Membership within the Comcast Help Forums is both a privilege and a responsibility. To ensure the community remains an active and helpful environment we added a few tips to help you.

  • Be good to each other - This forum was designed to build a positive and thriving peer to peer help community. Positive, constructive comments will help to maintain the positive spirit on these forums. Please give the same consideration and tolerance to others that you would like to receive from them.
  • Keep it clean - Use appropriate language and netiquette. This includes offering assistance to others where you can. In addition, we ask that you avoid typing in ALL CAPS, avoid profanity, no inappropriate images, and refrain from “bumping” (posting for the sole purpose of moving a thread to the top of a forum page). For more details on the types of posts that are prohibited, see here. Trolls live under bridges not in the Xfinity Forum.
  • Keep it on-topic - Any posting that is not relevant to the community, the topic at hand, or to other peoples’ comments will be removed. Posts that discuss moderator action will be removed.
  • Help us stay spam free - The Comcast Help Forums are not to be used for trading/swapping, selling or advertising non-Comcast products, services, petitions, or other online venues. This includes soliciting others to participate in any type of specific action and authoring multiple posts about the same topic.

This means avoid posting things like “how-to” obtain pirated software, copyrighted material, malicious content, illegal activities, etc.. Illegal Content and Activities are defined in the Comcast Terms of Service Agreement.

For account specific questions, we may need to authenticate your account, for your security and the security of your account we will always do this via a private message. To keep yourself and your account secure please avoid posting that personal information in public posts.
  • Keep it public – The best communities have most conversations happening in the public boards. This help to ensure that our users get the fastest most accurate response possible provided by our user or our employees and it benefits other users who may have a similar question. When interacting with an employee we will always try to keep as much of the conversation in that public thread, but know we may ask for a private message if we need to discuss account specific details. To help maintain our forum design, we ask that you never send unsolicited/unwanted private messages to any employee or user in these forums.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

That was part of the problem, mainly becuase of personal information within that transcript and for bypassing the language filter in a prior reply in the thread which I just noticed or I would have removed it earlier myself. Those are the guidelines for language and conduct for these forums. I do understand your frustration as I am going through similar issues myself which is being worked on for about 5-6 months, but they have been working on it consistently, but just try to keep the languagae civil and respectful and dont make personal information public.

But MAC address are clearly OK to post for cloning, Simply the remedy to the issues is down time, causing a financially hardship to Xfinity./ <edited> and what I was attempting to show in that chat for other users but will post on the other sites . <edited>

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

That is up to an administrator to decide on that one when they review it. The best thing I can say is that if you meet these Guidelines listed here and then use this as a reference, Xfinity Forum Acceptable Use Policy then you should be fine.

To be fair Comcast has been honoring the $20.00 resolution fee. With resistance but has been honoring it.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

<edited> in short the update from chat was a new appointment that they assure me fiber is needed to support gig service. I emailed the tech ops supervisor as you can read below.

Hey XXXXX

As discussed just touching base with you from our conversation Friday.  I did go buy a new modem that has been getting the same results with speed and inconsistences.  Arris SB8200. I got the new modem after your visit and have been running with it since.  The event logs are still showing T3,T4 errors as well as sync with the CMTS. I did chat with support, again and assure me that a special team is coming out on the xxh to run fiber “as they state it’s needed to support gig”. Now I am taking that with a grain of salt, and understand with the DOCSIS 3.1 and bonded channels it is possible under your current infrastructure.  As maintenance on the line did make an improvement. I still have not been able to obtain gig service or close to it.  Nothing above 500 today.

You suggested to install the Comcast provided modem. I still don’t think this this is a resolution. However if this “Special Team” that I would think is under your command. Would like to try the XB6 as we spoke about last week so be it.

Support chat stated because of this team coming out I could not change my appointment to the weekend, or afterhours of the normal workday. As I think you would understand I have took a few days of too accommodate my appointments, and ask that you work with me on the next one.

Because Comcast admins keep deleting my post to document my experience on an issue that has been plaguing a bunch, I have chosen to bring this post into public spotlight under alternative venues. I will continue to update with REAL information as its obtained. 7th service visit and more time I have to book off work.

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Fast update. Had the tech ops supervisor and a plant ops supervisor out with an additional bucket testing amps after agreeing from last weekend visit and emails directly with… the guys on the ground. Comcast installed and provisioned the XB6. First off it still remained the same speeds as the Arris and the Netgear. This continues not to look good for Gig speed. They had the JDSU at the TAP and moved in the house from tap> extreme 2 way. Both times well in the house that its getting 1.7G from the tap. So out of three modems the CM100, Arris and now the Comcast provided SB6 I am still not getting anything close to 800 or gig. I will save with the faces after they installed their modem. So I just ran another speed test posted below.SOOoo…

So they tell me they are getting 1.7 gig on the JDSU inside bypassing everything… My question to all the experts is.. I am looking at this 2 ways.

  • They are pulling down from the tap 1.7 gig but out of 3 modems 1 being the sb6 have not seen anything past 700
  • Or that they are pulling down 1.7 gig from the tap off the mainline and out of that 1.7 gig and any number of people on the node That gig is mine and 700 is to the rest.. See were my mind is going here?

Re: Netgear CM1000 inconsistent speed // not getting advertised download speeds

Kind of going with a few different post here:

So one thing that I have to mention. Last week the same tech and tech ops supervisor were out and if not has been deleted above somewhere in the posts. The sated and argued that http://speedtest.xfinity.com/ was the most accurate. Now 7 days later after all this and with the sb6, it was more like “see how it jumps to 700,800 and settles on the lower number…” Come on… What is it going to be “the most accurate?”

So we are going to let the sb6 fly for a week or two and see if anything changes.

What does dslreports say with a wired connection?  (BTW, I found I had extended my ethernet connection with Cat5 and not the gig version.
