Intermittent Connection Issues

For a few weeks we have been having issues with the connection to Comcast dropping.  It seems to happen pretty randomly.  Cable Modem is Arris SB6183.

There are no splitters, there is a coupling in the cable (male to male) and a coupling at the wall plate (male to male).  We do not use the cable for any TV connections at all.

 

The cable modem was getting very hot and seemed to work better once it cooled off, so I replaced it with a new SB6183.  The old modem was several years old, but had not had issues until this started.  Replacing the modem seemed to help for a while, but it's been disconnecting pretty often for a few days now.

 

I replaced the cable from the wall outlet with a much shorter cable, about 3 feet. No difference.  

 

I exercised all of the connections inside of the house.  No difference.

 

When it drops the lights on the modem generally stay lit.  On occasion they will blink as it re-syncs.  Sometimes I get the "No Internet" warning on my PC, sometimes not.  Someone in the house is working at home over VPN and it plays havoc on that connection, dropping it instantly.

 

This morning I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with a support agent who seemed to not really understand the issue.  She sent multiple reset signals to the modem and finally scheduled a tech for 1/19/18.  After the final reset it stayed solid for some time, but disconnected a few hours later.

 

Looking at the status page after the remote resets there were 0 Corrected or Uncorrectable on any channel; now there are hundreds.

The stats as read at the modem level at that moment in time were o/k but there are three additional signal stats That can cause this which can't be read by the modem. They can only be read from their end by them polling the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) at the local headend facility.

They are the "Upstream Rx Power" (Upstream Receive Power Level), the "Upstream SNR Ch." (Upstream Signal To Noise Ratio), and the "Upstream ICFR" (In Channel Frequency Response). These are as equally important in diagnosing connectivity issues as are the modem's stats.

You can call in and ask what these figures are. The Upstream Receive Power Level should fall within the range of -2dB to +2dB with 0dB being in the middle and perfect.

The Upstream SNR should be least 31dB, and the higher it is the better.

The ICFR should be no higher than 2 dB.

You could have an intermittent noise ingress issue in only the upstream channel(s) / return path only somewhere.

They will be able to see whether or not everything is in the green zone and also see a history plot for the modem.

So here's an interesting twist...

 

I connected the cable modem directly to the cable coming into my house, eliminating 2 barrel connectors and 2 pieces of coax.  I've never seen the modem sync so quickly.  The send and receive levelsare higher as well as the S/N Ratio.  It's been online with no drops for 2 straight days.  The most recent event in the log is where it initially synced.

 

I suspect that 1 or both of the barrel connectors was getting flaky.  They were both part of cheap wall plates.

 

For now I'll leave it as is and if it stays solid tomorrow cancel the tech appointment for the 19th.  Later I'll replace the piece of cable in the wall and the connectors.

Comcast tech just left.  He found a very loose connection in the pedestal across the street.  We'll see how it goes for a few days.  Here's the levels now:

He should have padded down your DS lvls with an attenuator cause you're still running (a tad bit) hot. Also, are you not supposed to get a 4th upstream reading? Cause only counted three.

Most systems to my knowledge are 3 and some are 4.

Never had more than 3 upstream.

 

I'm not touching it for a few more days.  If it stays good I'll be adding 2 barrel connectors and 12 feet of cable that should drop the levels a bit.

That won't drop it enough. Bear in mind that that may not be the root cause of the problem but you could try inserting one of these into the line leading to the modem;

It stayed up with no errors for 6 days, but had a brief interruption today.  

 

So I reattached to the wall plate with new cables and connectors and added a 10 db pad. We'll see how it goes now.

It's been up for 8 straight days now!  I see some uncorrectables and the log has a few criticals related to Unicast maintenance ranging, but it's not dropping off and VPN will stay connected all day.
