I have THE STARTER PACKAGE-X1 internet (100 Mbps now / will upgrade eventually) and HD Cable TV, in Chicago, IL.
I need to run an ethernet cable OUTSIDE, from the Gateway (1st floor) to the PC room (2d floor). I’d use a 100 foot OUTDOOR cable. Which Cat should I use-considering future upgrade: Cat 5, 6, 7? Round or flat cable?
Cat 5e is still pretty much the industry standard. If you want to future-proof the installation though, go with direct burial Cat 6/6a. Cat 7 is overkill and offers you little or no benefit. I prefer round cable just because the flexible cable clips used to secure the cable utilizes screws and does not compress the wire. Flat clips tend to use a nail, which is not ideal.
