1Gig Synchronous Service - Minimum Firmware Version Requirement Question

Got an installation for 1Gig/1Gig Synchronous service as a bulk service at the condo on Wednesday. Speed test by the installation tech showed 400Mbps Download/40Mbps Upload. I was told the modem will cycle through overnight and the speed will get closer to the promised speed. Well, four nights later, it is still the same speed as on Wednesday. Start reading/learning about the technology and found that the firmware for the modem should be DOCSIS 3.1. Check the version on the modem and it shows 2.9.0.2 (see screenshot file attached). Call the support line. The first rep insisted my modem has DOCSIS 3.1 on it. After re-provisioning, it still shows 2.9.0.2 on my end. I got transfer to the 2nd rep. Now, the 2nd rep said the version does not matter DOCSIS 2.9.0.2 is fine.

Can someone please tell me if the version of my firmware is really "fine" for 1Gig Download and 1Gig Upload speed????

Re: 1Gig Synchronous Service - Minimum Firmware Version Requirement Question

You can't get symmetrical speeds with the current DOCSIS 3.1 standard based service. Also, the speeds are controlled by the modem's configuration / boot file, not the firmware. And you are mistaking DOCSIS 3.1 as being a version of firmware which it is not. What is the exact make and model number of the modem ?

Re: 1Gig Synchronous Service - Minimum Firmware Version Requirement Question

Hello EG,

Sorry for a tarday response.

It says "Manufactured by Arris, 3701 FAU Blvd., Boca Raton, FL" and "Model: X5001."

Why would DOCSIS 3.1 standard based service cannot support the symmetrical speed at 1Gig/1Gig when the standard says DOCSIS 3.1 (not full duplex) can support 10Gig/1-2Gig (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS#Comparison)?

Is there a way to look at the modem config through the interface at 10.0.0.1?

Thank you for your insights.

The current upstream / return path bandwidth spectrum allocation on DOCSIS is physically limited. It's the nature of the beast.

Here is an informative article about the future for the upstream bandwidth capability for DOCSIS based systems;

The do offer a 2 gigabit (with symmetrical speeds) FTTH (Fiber To The Home) service in some areas.

O/k that is an ONU (Optical Network Unit) for fiber based service (FTTH). It has nothing to do with DOCSIS. DOCSIS is a standard for coaxial cable based service..

They better be. Their contract with the condo association states "1Gig Synchronous service" and they did come to install the Fiber into the building, the "roof" of each floor, and into the unit where the modem is located.

I guess you meant it is unlikely that they will be able to fulfill the terms in the contract. Oh, well. Thanks anyhow.

I didn't "mean" anything other than the *facts* that I posted.... I'm not a CC employee. Suggest that you keep calling in to their customer support about your issue.

Re: 1Gig Synchronous Service - Minimum Firmware Version Requirement Question

Understood. Thank you. Also, found something "interesting." Apparently the X5001 model is not originally belong to Arris. It was a product of Pace Micro Technology Plc that was acquired by Arris. That's probably the reason I cannot find anything about it anywhere on Arris website.... Fun indeed.....
