Assuming you are in the new email format, on the Inbox page click on "Sort by" at the top of the message list and you should see this-------------
If the "Conversations" option is selected then sorting by other options except for "Date" is not observed. It appears necessary to first clear the "Conversations" option, then select whatever option by which you want to sort, except not "Conversations".

When you click on "Sort by", Conversations should be the last choice you see in the list of options.
Sorting emails by date
If you look at the screenshot I posted upthread you will see the option to sort by date.
Availability of the option to sort by sender is inconsistent/intermittent. Sometimes the option's available and, during the same session, sometimes it's not. Comcast issue; they keep changing email without ensuring that the change is functional beyond access to email..
I am using the app “Xfinity Connect” on an iPad with IOS.10........I have hunted many times in the past and there has never been a “Sort by” option in my email.
There WAS one years ago when I was using a PC, but I’m very frustrated that I can’t sort alphabetically or by Sender, or whatever. It’s a big hassle to try & find something in particular, or to facilitate cleaning up the inbox.

The mobile apps just don't have all the functionality of the webmail interface or a desktop client. The Xfinity Connect mobile app is no exception to that rule. It has no ability to change the sorting. The mail app that comes with iOS has some, but even that is quite limited compared to the webmail UI.
