Could someone please tell me how to create groups with my email contacts?

Assuming you are in the new email format, open the address book from the Inbox page, and in the toolbar you should see a group of three silhouettes.  Click on that and follow the prompts.  You can drag and drop contacts from the list to the group folder, or use the Move icon in the toolbar.
