Phone Scam

Got a call today, came up as Comcast, I checked the number and it is from Comcast business (we just have an Xfinity residential account with them) saying someone was trying to use our account to access a porn site and thinks our security has been compromised.  They had our CLSID number, and had me verify it.  They sent me an email to confirm and it was from Xfinity.s@mail.com  Everything was sounding legit, but when they tried to get me to go to fastsupport.net to help set up a block on the email they said was trying to be hacked my alarms went off and I hung up.  (By the way, the email they said was trying to be used was an old prodigy.net email we were trying to phase out).  I called Comcast myself, but they were of little help.  I am pretty certain this was a scam, again sounded so legit at first with all the info they had on us.  Be careful folks.  If anyone has any experience with something similar please post.

It certainly sounds like a "tech support" phone call scam-- see https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0346-tech-support-scams. Keep in mind that it's easy for scammers to fake their caller ID phone numbers. Windows systems use lots of CLSIDs and it's easy for a scammer to pick one that will be present on any Windows system. Comcast doesn't send email from "@mail.com" addresses. Fastsupport looks to be software used to take over your computer remotely, which is another common step in these cold call "tech support" scams.

For samples of recent scam activity, see https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/alerts/.

Re: Phone Scam

Thanks for the info, I should add the date they gave me that my account was supposedly compromised happened to be the day we moved and switched over services. I don’t know if that played a part in trying to dupe me or if it was merely coincidental.

Re: Phone Scam

Wow, I had a similar call on Wednesday, December 26th! The guy left a message with my name and address stating that another order was received and a need to verify the information. The number he left to return the call was 800/934-6489! I called the number, it had a strange message so I hung up and called the Comcast number that's familar to me 800-266-2278. I talked with an agent who didn't find any information about a recent order and transferred me to the Billing Department! To my surprised the agent didn't see where Comcast had called me and gave me the "be careful not to divulve personal information to scammers"!

Well, well, well! I received another phone call today Saturday, December 29th but wasn't able to answer so I listened to the voicemail message! "This call is for (my name) under the account at (my address).  We see that you did call in but it still haven't been confirmed or verified if this new customer did or did not have a correct address if you were or were not moving. (Ah) So we still need to confirm or verify some information, so if you could please let us know if you have any intentions on moving or if not and if this other customer may have used an incorrect address I would love to (inaudible) get that information (ah..inaudible) as still have not been able to get back in touch with the minor. The number you want to call back is 800/934-6489, again that's 800/934-6489."

I decided to look up the number first and it shows "Xfinity Customer Service". so I called and explain to the agent that it's an uncomfortable feeling coming across as scam! I let him listen to the recording that the guy left me earlier and was put on hold for a few minutes. The agent alleges that the call came from their Sales Department! I responded, "what?" "You heard the message the guy left me and it didn't sound like a sales call!" Anyway, I was told my number will be placed on the do not call list! I am still uneasy about this whole thing! This craziness is something else!

Re: Phone Scam

I had a call from this number today. He had a very heavy Indian accent and I could hardly understand him. He said my email was hacked by somone in Russia and if I could go to my computer and log in, he would access and check it out. Yeah, right. I told him I wasn't home and he said he would call back in an hour. I blocked his number and even though it came up as comcast customer service, it was registered itto a Rachel Ward. The number is 800-934-6489. It's a scam.

That certainly sounds like a scammer.

No, 1-800-934-6489 is just 1-800-Xfinity, the main Comcast customer service number. Keep in mind that it's easy for scammers to fake their caller ID name and phone number, and that is no doubt what the scammer in this case did.

1-800-266-2278 (1-800-Comcast) still works as well, and your bill may list yet a third contact number.

Re: Phone Scam

I had the same call today.  The caller ID shows the 1-800-COMCAST number, guy with Indian accent saying someone is Russia attempted to hack my router.  He, of course, wanted me to install software that would allow him to remote connect to my computer so he could make some 'program fixes'.  Yeah right!!  I'm a computer programmer and if 'fixes' need to be made to my computer I will do them myself!!  Hung up on him.
