I'm curious about getting gigabit service, however I prefer to handle my own network setup and provide my own hardware.
From the information I'm getting on the phone, if I get gigabit service (which in my area IS being provided over DOCSIS, I'd completely understand if I'd be going FTTH) I'm either A: Unable to use my own equipment or B: able to use my equipment, but I still have to pay $60 for someone to come out and play with my network.
What's the reasoning behind this? I have my own modem (which granted I do have to upgrade), and this modem is completely capable of telling me that the signal coming into it is absolutely top-notch. I have no interest in having Comcast supplied equipment, or a technician coming out to mess with my stuff for $60. I was also under the impression the FCC requires you guys to allow me to use my own equipment if I wish.
When I called to get the gigabit service, I politely asked to have the installation fee waived in which the customer service rep agreed. With that being said an appointment was setup and I've had gigabit internet for over 2 months now. I'm very happy with it. I did give the new advanced gateway(XB6) a go on it's own. Let me tell you, it is not good for gaming even with a hardwired connection, (lag, latancy, disconnects during onling gaming) but wifi coverage was excellent throughout my 2 story home. I've always used my own router with the gateway bridged and that is my current setup. I get a solid 940 down & 40'ish up. And you can use your own equipment, but I believe the initial setup must be done by the tech, that may have changed over the last 2 months. Once the tech has established the gigabit service and your signals are within the parameters & you're getting the correct speeds you can use your own equipment after he leaves or switch it out before he leaves, it's up to you.
