Since the reps will not actually help resolve this issue and will instead insist on using the forum....here is the solution from a user. Take a look at your account info. In my case, there was a phone number added as 111-111-1111. I am guessing this is something dumb that happened in the database and affected lots of customers. This bogus number was set as my 'preferred' number while my real number was secondary. I could not fix this without first changing the 111-111-1111 to a real number. Use anything with a real area code I guess, because you are not going to use it anyway. After you have gotten rid of the bogus number, you will be able to enter chat. Unreal right?
