Equipment charges

I bought my own modem and router in February (from Amazon) and returned the Comcast equipment.  My internet has been working perfectly.  Today I noticed I am still being charged $13.00 a month for the Comcast modem.  I called customer service and they claim their modem is still active and I have to call them back with the CMAC number of my equipment.  How in the heck can a modem that I completely disconnected in February still be active?!!! It's not in my house or any where near it.  And why is my service working just fine if that's the case?  

  I did a Google search and found that Comcast apparently has been doing this to people for a while. http://money.com/money/4209556/comcast-modem-fees-ripoff/.  I hope it doesn't take me months to fix and get a refund.
