Could not trade out my modem b/c tech said I would have to add tv service!

While configuring my xfinity approved cable modem to avoid continuing to pay the modem rental fee the tech had a wait a minute moment and said I couldn't because I have internet and land line service only (we've never had tv service and currently pay about $125/mo for the privilege of medium speed internet and our land line).

 

It's wrong that Comcast can't allow a loyal customer to switch modems and avoid their high rental fee without ensnaring them in the downward spiral of additional services.  

 

Anyone else experience this?
