Activating personal modem

Hey so I'm having issues activating my own modem on an account with my new roommate. We were told that since it's still registered to my old Comcast account that is now cancelled that we can't use it. This doesn't seem right and we've already spent hours on the phone trying to get it resolved but no one seems to be able to fix it. Basically I'm wondering what my options are and if there's another way to get it registered onto the account so we can finally use our internet?
