Request a payment extension

I called in to customer service 2 days ago to request a payment extension. The rep told me not to worry it takes a while to have services suspended, the point is I plan on paying with my next pay check. I don’t want to risk my account being disconnected. Any one know the process to request a payment extension? Please and thank you.
