Lost my job and want to downgrade, but in a contract...

I lost my job and want to downgrade my triple play package. I still have almost a year or so in my contract, but I'm only looking to cut where I can - maybe removing premium channels and get a slower internet speed or reducing the channel package. Customer service seems to insist on the phone that I will be penalized. Do I have any options?
