xfinity update and now no internet

I have a Nighthawk modem router CAX 30S which I bought 8 months ago and worked fine until Xfinity recently "upgraded" their infrastructure in my neighborhood. Now I have no Internet. Remote troubleshooting with reseting at my end re-provisioning at Xfinity end did not resolve the issue. Xfinity blames my Nighthawk router modem, saying it needs to be "updated." Nighthawk is no help at all, saying it will only provide an update if I purchase a "service plan." I smell a rat!

 •  Make sure you are signed in here in the Xfinity Forum. Click "Sign In" if necessary
 • Click the "Direct Message" icon (square chat icon in the upper right corner of your screen next to the bell icon)
 • Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon
 • Type "Xfinity Support" in the "To:" line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list which appears. The "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line
 • Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window
