Using MMS when mobile data is turned off.

I have a Pixel 2XL running Android 10.

 

I am using the Messages app for MMS.

 

On my phone, I have an option that appears when I turn mobile data off.

 

The option is titled, "MMS messages: Send & receive when mobile data is off".

 

Does anyone have experience with this?  I want to know if I have mobile data turned off, and this MMS exception option turned on, if the use of MMS will not get counted against my mobile data used. 

 

The XM app will only show data down to the 0.01GB, which means I would have to send about 10MB of data to test, unless there is a better option.

 

Thoughts?

Just want to give an update on an experiment I did.

I had wifi and mobile data turned off, and had the use of MMS turned on.

Then I sent a large amount of MMS data (total was more than 10 MB).

I then confirmed thru Xfinity mobile app that this way of using MMS is not "counted" against mobile data use.

I like the option that you have on your Pixel 2XL. On iPhones we have to turn off all of the Apps one by one that we don't want to use cellular data if we just want to use MMS. 

 

The Pixel 2XL option is titled, "MMS messages: Send & receive when mobile data is off".

 

The question I have for you is was your large test message Blue or Green? If it was Blue it means that you were actually using Google advanced messaging (RCS?) over WiFi through Google servers to another user who was also signed into Google advanced messaging.

My test condition involved turning wifi off, and sending pictures and videos to a recipient not using RCS. I think the color indication you are referring to only applied to text based messages, and not messages involving pictures or videos. Anyway, I am 100% certain that my test was not using RCS.

Very interesting! Maybe, just maybe, you found a loophole, at least for now?

Just for you, okay and others, if you are on LTE then Voice, SMS, and MMS are actually using LTE data. However, XM just ignores or does not charge for the data used for Voice and SMS. XM says that we are charged for the data used for MMS, but maybe that doesn’t always happen. Verizon and AT&T do not charge for MMS.

The MMS option just allows you to MMS in addition to Voice and SMS when you have turned off mobile data.

What’s also curious is that it allowed you to send a 10MB MMS when XM says that their maximum is 600kb?

If you look at your billings they will show each of your MMSs at zero cost, but the data used would presumably just be shown in your data usage.

Just got a Samsung S21+ but won't allow me to send/receive messages from iPhone users. If I turn my data on, it will, kind of, very spotty when using an iphone to send them to the Samsung.  If no other apps have access to data, will I be charged for using data for only texts messages?
