poor performance ( latency, ping )

poor performance ( latency, ping )

Hi,

Since about mid January home network performance has been bad.  Online gaming has been un-playable, on PC and ps4.  VPN is slow, I often have to reload pages to get them to finish loading, and streaming while watchable could be better.  I have Blast! ( 250mbs, since Sept '17 ), and untill yesterday didn't know I needed a new modem.  Hoping the modem was the issue, even though performance was ok untill Jan, I picked up the new modem ( xFi Advanced Gateway ) this morning - and performance is still an issue.

I tested this morning with Overwatch ( because I can quickly get network info from it ), and my ping ranges from 60 to 140 constantly, latency hits 400+ms.  Pre-problem, my ping was 20ms and there were no latency issues.  My WinMTR output is better today than it has been, but I'm still getting "no response from host" for a few routers in the path ( output below ).

I'm kinda stuck and need some advise on what to do.

Thanks,

Tom

That's normal, as long as the non-responding router is passing packets along to the next hop.

You're showing an average RTT to your gateway of 84ms, somtimes as much as 400+ ms. That's way too high. With an Ethernet connection you should be getting 1 or 2 ms at most, over Wifi a few more than that. You need to determine why it's taking so long for packets to travel between your computer and your gateway.

Are you using Ethernet or Wifi?

Re: poor performance ( latency, ping )

I'd be happy with one or two routers not responding, but my lastest WinMTR (below) is similar to what I had with the old modem.   I'm wifi now, and have been through out.  I'll run a cable to test...
