Xfinity HotSpot FAQs

I am just wonder... Is there a time limit on how long it will take for this Home Network Hot Spot feature to actually Turn Off? I ask becasue I have disabled it through My Account Preferances and it says that it is Disabled, yet my Modem is still broadcasting it. Do we have to wait like a day or so for it to actually Stop Broadcasting to connection?

Also... The reason I turned it off am trying to turn it off is because about every day or day and a half my Network goes down and I have to jump through hoops to get it back up. I have to keep going downstairs to unplug the Modem. I even unplug my Router even though it still seems to be working as I can connect to it but not he Modem, and yet even then it does not always work on getting me through to the modem. I have to wait for about an hour at times before the Network comes back on. Sometimes it is just a few minutes but the times that it takes as long as almost an hour gets me real frustrated. This all started around the time they turned on this Home Network feature and just got worse since then, so I am wondering if it is this Home Network feature that is causing it. Is it possible that this home Network feature is killing my modem or conflicting with the regualr Network?

Also just encase you are wondering, this is not just a WiFi signal that I am loosing, it is my Ethernet Connection which is my main. I run Ethernet to my Upsatirs Router which feeds my connections upstairs do to poor wireless signal from the Modem on that part of the house and the fact that some PC's upstairs don't have WiFi adapters. Its a large house so the WiFi sigal has trouble getting through all the walls and I need connection in every part of the house. Smiley Happy

Close but no bannana - used the manage your settings and it turned off ONLY to turn back on in less than an hour.  Checked the settings and lo and behold they still showed OFF.  Called Comcast and was informed that to keep it off you have to change the setting w/in the modem itself.  But they won't tell you how to do that....the did shut it off.  It'll be interesting to see how long it stays off this time.

Comcast Jesse or other Comcast, xfinity rep -please, asap permanently disable the wifi hotspot feature of the modem/router I recieved today. Please keep it turned off forever, and never re-activate it from transmitting a signal from my home without my expressed, written consent. I never want my address published by Comcast for anything, including these hotspots. Thank You

Just adding a little more info to what Anon1245491 said:

If you're thinking of buying your own equipment make sure you check out:

http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

On this website you can find all of the approved devices that will work with our services. I recommend you sort out by "retail only devices" so that you can see only the ones you would be able to get at an electronics retailer.

Feel free to contact if you need further assistance choosing a device.

Thank You!!!

Hello EG,

Well, you know people move on and progress, not to say working here on the Comcast Forums is bad by any means, I'm happy I was given the opportunity to help our customers through here.

And now, the truth comes out. Excerpt from Consumer Affairs, yesterday:

And just where is this wi-fi capacity coming from? It may be as close as your home. Comcast has been quietly replacing the routers it supplies to cable customers with new models that have a "channel" for use by the customer and another channel that will be available to anyone with a Comcast account. Cablevision's plan may be similar.

This means that someone driving by your home may be, for at least a few seconds, connecting through the router in your spare bedroom.

Cablevision calls its service Freewheel and says it will include unlimited data, talk and text for $9.95 a month for the company’s broadband Internet subscribers and $29.95 for noncustomers.

There has been some consternation from activists who say Comcast is invading its users privacy and needlessly running up their electricity bills. But Comcast insists the second "channel" -- which isn't really a channel but simply a second user account on the router -- will be completely walled off from the consumer's network and the twain shall never meet.

Thanks for posting what I had heard, but not seen in writing.  Besides the frustration of losing my Internet connection  5-7 times an hour when we first installed the wireless gateway around Oct-Nov last year, the mere thought of my wi-fi being siphoned for others to use was the last straw. I had Comcast bridge my modem and I reconnected my Linksys router.  I haven't had a problem since. Fingers crossed.

I received a new modem for phone service that I activated and I just became aware of this public hotspot that is active on this equipment.  I tried to disable it through the "Users & Preferences" section of the account web page, but I keep getting the message "We're sorry. Something unexpected happened. Please try again later."

Could someone at Comcast please disable it for me?  Thank you.

I've looked into your account and it shows that you do not have a Xfinity WiFi capable modem. So there is nothing to turn off.

I apologise for the delay in getting these issues taken care of. ComcastJesse is not actively on the forums now but I'll make sure I get to every request here on the thread.

Thank You!!!

George and Jesse:

Are y'all starting to see a pattern here? If y'all really launch this "voice calls over unsuspecting peoples' wifi", you're gonna need a bigger boat!

Hello All,

Ok, so I've been working most of my shift getting through the requests to have the Xfinity WiFi turned off. I think I got through all of them up until the point ComcastJesse was working this thread.

I am going to be actively working it from now on and if anyone is having problems disabling the network on their own please let me know and I'll be happy to take care of that.

These links here might be helpful to anyone with questions regarding Xfinity WiFi

If I missed anyone that requested to have the hotspot turned off please reply here or with a PM

Thanks everyone

Hello

I've looked at your account using your Comcast.net email listed here and it looks like you do not have Xfinity WiFi Hotspot capable equipment.

If you have another account under a different username, please send me a private message with the info and I'll disable the hotspot if its enabled.

Thank You!!!

Turn off my hotspot.

Every time I use wifi, my hotspot gets enabled and I live in a very congested condo complex and my hotspot (wifi) goes crazy with people using my hotspot.

Again, I've been altering my wifi use (once or twice a week) just so I don't have to keep having you turn off my hospot. What is wrong with you people? Why is my hotspot enabled each time I use my wifi? This is ridiculous!!!!!

I'm about to switch my services. I'm fed up. And you know how little I use internet.

Turn off my hotspot. Someone's using it right now!

hey, disablehotspot:

Nonsense. Haven't you read the propaganda? That hot spot is just for your guests, so you don't have to give them your WiFi password. LOL

Wait until they start allowing people to make voice calls, using the "xfinitywifi" service. You just THINK it's slow now...
