I have just received my new modem to replace my "out dated" one.  There is a space in the bottom of the modem for a LARGE battery but the box did not contain one.  Is this a packing oversight or is the battery not really needed?

Comcast does not supply free batteries any longer. Comcast will sell you one for $35 or so or you can buy one on Amazon or eBay fro around $10. See comcast link for their battery statement. http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/phone/getting-a-new-battery/

The battery is not needed for normal operation. It is only needed to power the device in the event that you have a power outage. They no longer supply the back-up battery for free. You can one from them here;

Seen them cheaper on E-bay.
