Ping spike to a comcast IP, is it possible to get rerouted?

Ping spike to a comcast IP, is it possible to get rerouted?

I am getting higher ping than normal to a server in New York over the last week.  Usually I have around 30 ping, now I am hovering around 60-70ms. Tracert below:

Tracing route to c-192-223-31-243.inap-nyc.nfoservers.com [192.223.31.243]

Trace complete.

On hop 6, my ping is spiking unusually high.  I am assuming this is causing the ping time to be high when it reaches the destination.  Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this?  Did my route change recently?

Looks like normal trace. 60-70 ms is still fine. Below 100 ms is normal, 50 ms is very good. Remember we are talking about milliseconds (one-thousandth of a second) here, there really isn't a significant difference between 30 and 60 ms.

I understand, however when playing games at 70 ping, I'm noticing a lot of rubber banding and lag, whereas before on 30 ping it was a smooth experience.  In a game those 30ms are a big difference.

I'm a gamer too so I understand where you are coming from. I don't think a 30ms difference is your issue though if you are seeing rubber banding and lag - it's not enough of a difference to cause those issues. If you have those types of issues due to latency, you'll typically see ping times @ 200+ms. Your lag issues probably lay elsewhere.

Do you know how to further troubleshoot this latency issue?  If it isn't the ping there must be something else going on.  In-game there is a loss and choke measure but I haven't seen any loss while playing.

Hard to understand why they'd be routing Boston traffic though Chicago before sending it on to New York, but that's what your trace shows. Another Boston area user posted a similar trace in http://forums.xfinity.com/t5/Your-Home-Network/weird-hop-in-tracert/m-p/3065156#U3065156.

Yeah I'm actually a tech for comcast, already checked all of my levels.  Everything looks good.  I'm very confused why they are routing me through Chicago before going to New York.  I have a friend who lives in the same town as me and when he runs tracert, his connection goes directly to NY, so I'm not sure why my traffic is being routed differently.

It would make me feel better knowing that there is a temporary issue that is causing traffic to be routed in this way, but everyone I have talked to on the phone tells me that there's nothing they can do and that my network is being routed in an "optimal way".  It is very frustrating that it seems to only be my network that is being routed this way.

.@d1vide

Are you using a router that has a MAC address cloning feature ?

I am currently using an XB3 gateway.  I've had it for a while, and to be honest I'm not entirely sure what MAC address cloning is.

O/k nevermind. You can't do it with that device anyway.

So am I basically SOL here?  No one at comcast seems to be want to acknowledge the issue or give me a cause or resolution.  Do I just wait and hope it gets fixed eventually?

I am having the same issue with the bad routing to New York.

Why are they routing us to Chicago then back again?

Re: Ping spike to a comcast IP, is it possible to get rerouted?

Yeah if you are used to playing at 30ms, especially in a fast, often reaction-based game, then randomly hopping up to 60ms is quite annoying.  A lot of people will tell you it doesn't matter, but they clearly don't play something as competitively as you do.  For your own sake go ahead and feel the difference: http://kkmet.com/ping/

I'm in the same boat as you.  Comcast should fix this because playing league blows now:

Tracing route to 104.160.131.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

  1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1
  2 8 ms 8 ms 9 ms 96.120.70.25
  3 10 ms 9 ms 9 ms 162.151.219.253
  4 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms 96.108.158.198
  5 10 ms 11 ms 11 ms be-41-ar01.woburn.ma.boston.comcast.net [68.85.37.161]
  6 38 ms 38 ms 42 ms be-7015-cr02.350ecermak.il.ibone.comcast.net [68.86.91.5]
  7 38 ms 37 ms 37 ms be-10577-pe03.350ecermak.il.ibone.comcast.net [68.86.86.2]
  8 56 ms 55 ms 55 ms 104.160.131.1

This has made my ping in-game, which used to be low 40s always, fluctuate between 70-100ms and it feels absolutely atrocious.

zocton, thanks for that site! Pretty cool. While we are unable to manipulate your traceroute, we can take a look at other factors causing high ping. Please shoot me or Che a private message for help (this is for anyone on this thread, fyi).

Comcast is certainly able to manipulate routes but customer satisfaction in not priority.

If they are not able to manipulate routes then how did our routes change 2 weeks ago that increased our latency. Stop blowing smoke up our butts. That hop to Chicago we not there 3 weeks ago for us, what did it just magicly appear.

As I said customer satisfaction is not a priority. Look at all the complaints here. Nobody really gets the speed that they paid for and that was advertised, Nobody.

Anon1158887, I understand your frustration. As I mentioned, there may be other factors here contributing to your high ping. I see you have an ongoing private message thread with Che. She will continue to assist your specific issues there.
