How do I connect my own linksys wirelss g router to the xfinity modem?

When I plug the ethernet cord (thatconnects my computer to the internet) to my router, I do not get any data across the network. I can connect to the wireless network, but not to the internet.

Please Help

(Step by step if you can)

Whenever you change the device connected to a cable modem, you must reset the modem before it will communicate with the new device. For a straight modem, just unplug the power cord for a minute. For an EMTA (modem that has phone jacks and battery backup), press the recessed Reset button on the back panel with a toothpick or similar.

That is not a modem, that is a router...the box you connect the router to is (theoretically) the modem.
