Re: How to block peer to peer sharing on my network i have a linksys wrt-54g v6?

I don't think there's any single thing you can block for this. Because of ISPs that have tried to block p2p, the programs have been designed to try lots of ports.

Maybe it's a stupid question, but why can't you just ASK the people not to do it? Why would you let someone use your network who's not considerate enough to follow such a request?

Some of the New Routers have provision for Content filtering and that sort of thing.  Don't know if that exends to P2P but it would be worth taking a look at.  Might talk to the various Manufaturers to see if they can prvide a router that provides the functionality you are looking for.

Re: How to block peer to peer sharing on my network i have a linksys wrt-54g v6?

i have an iresponsable teenager that gives my password to god knows who. i guess i can just change the password and hope that he doesnt get the new one or enable mac address filtering and only allow my machines on the network it will suck for him and his friends playing games. but there should be away to block p2p so people like me dont have to worry about getting emails reguarding the DMCA.

Re: How to block peer to peer sharing on my network i have a linksys wrt-54g v6?

If someone is user p2p on your computer the program is probably installed on the machine. Uninstall it.

Have your visitors use the guest account.

What is a guest account?

A guest account is an account for users who don't have a permanent account on your computer or domain. It allows people to use your computer without having access to your personal files. People using the guest account can't install software or hardware, change settings, or create a password.

You have to turn on the guest account before it can be used.

You could install DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index) on your router. Then use Access Restrictions to kill any P2P traffic.

[ Edited ]

Sounds like a better solution.

Caveat: Needs to make sure DD-WRT will install on a Version 6 WRT54G

That Said,

QE's solution is somewhat less technical

Parent makes sure they are the Admin and sets a Strong Password with letters numbers and Case changes

Parent creates a Guest account for the Teenager with or without a password

Parent sets Parental conrols to block Pornography

Probably need to remove all P2P software by going to sart > Control Panel > AddRemove Programs and deleting the stuff added by the Teen.

Re: How to block peer to peer sharing on my network i have a linksys wrt-54g v6?

well after searching endlessly online i found a place called OPENDNS and it blocks domain names and has an option to block p2p transfers.  http://www.opendns.com/ this place also has the ability to block many other services "porn, social networks and other types of websites" im surprised comcast doesnt have a simular service to allow customers to block unwanted content. it was easy to set up all i had to do was set the static dns servers on my router to their dns server addresses. amazingly enough netflix loads faster so does my email. now i dont have to worry that any of his friends or him use their computers to watch porn or p2p.

Re: How to block peer to peer sharing on my network i have a linksys wrt-54g v6?

Torrent clients generally use IP addresses, so blocking DNS servers won't do much but filter out sites that have P2P trackers. It guess will make it a little harder for them.

Re: How to block peer to peer sharing on my network i have a linksys wrt-54g v6?

You can download a torrent with out the websites so if places like the piratebay are blocked then they can't find te stuff to download. Terr are lagitamit reasons to use peer 2 peer such as that how you down most Linux operating systems but list the torrent file on their site. So with that said I believe that my solution has been solved. I was mainly tryig to stop movies and music from being illegally downloaded. I buy all my music & movies from lagitamit places like vudu and iTunes or bestbuy. my son is also grounded even though he says he didn't download it and if he didn't do it one of his friends did and apparently he allowed it. So Im sure if he didnt do it he is going to get the kid that did so I can talk to his or her parents about the appropriate use of the Internet and what he or she did was stealing.
