Gig Internet (1000 MBPS)

Gig Internet (1000 MBPS)

What is required for Gig Internet with Comcast? I called billing and they said I needed a tech to switch to that package.

I have the latest XFINITY Gateway with dual band 5GHZ internet. Why do they need to come out to get gig internet?

Re: Gig Internet (1000 MBPS)

The company policy is that a tech visit is needed to make sure that the gig service will work properly.

Everyone's situation is different, but in my case, even though I balked initially, a tech install uncovered a few problems that I would've missed completely, and would've definitely affected my gigabit service had I opted for a self install.

BTW you have the latest gateway, i.e. the XB6? If you don't, then you'll need to either lease the XB6 or purchase a Comcast approved DOCSIS 3.1 retail modem.

My house is new so all wiring is brand new. Including line to pole

I have a TG1682G. Would that work?

No. You need a DOCSIS 3.1 compliant device.

What if I do a package with 400 Mbps speed?

I have to switch my gateway. I have tons connected to it.

Re: Gig Internet (1000 MBPS)

Unfortunately the TG1682G isn't rated for the Extreme Pro (400) speed; Blast Pro (250) is the fastest it can do. You'd still have to upgrade your gateway. Comcast will lease you the XB6 gateway, or you can invest in a 24x8 DOCSIS 3.0 modem/router or gateway, and save yourself the $11/mo rental fee.

If you need help selecting a modem, go to https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com to see what your options are.

I have their Landline voice service. I think I am forced to lease from them?

Re: Gig Internet (1000 MBPS)

Not at all - obviously it will depend on what speed tier you ultimately subscribe to. It gets a little trickier the faster you get.

If you choose Extreme Pro, you can easily get an all in one gateway like the Netgear C7100V or the ARRIS SVG2482AC, but unfortunately there are no currently approved all in one reail gateways for GIgabit.

You can get around this by getting separate devices - in my case, I had an ARRIS SB8200 for my Gigabit internet modem, an older ARRIS TM722G modem for voice only, and an ASUS RT-AC88U as my router. Worked pretty well, too.
