Comcast is coming out this weekend to install the boost internet. I already have a router, the Linksys E4200 and it has an ethernet port marked "Internet". The sales rep indicated that I would need a modem or that I would need to rent a modem from Comcast at a monthly rate. I asked him if the router would be sufficient and he wasn't sure. Ideally the router would be enough, but if I need a modem I would prefer to purchase a modem rather then renting one. So my questions are:

1. Do I need to purchase a modem or will my router be enough?

2. If #1 is yes, what will the modem need? Modem recommendations (looking for something affordable)?

Solution

What you'll need (either by renting from Comcast or buting one yourself) is a cable modem, not an ethernet modem like the one you already have. A list of Comcast-supported cablemodems are here: http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/
