Connectivity issues in Lancaster, PA

Connectivity issues in Lancaster, PA area (specifically 17554 zip)... is this known issue?

 

Looks lik eDNS issues - broswer constantly "looking up xxxx.com"... tracert 4.1.1.1 shows total timeouts.

Why are you using Level3 DNS ? Try using Comcast's DNSsec anycast servers at 75.75.75.75 & 75.75.76.76

Well - in the past (been a comcast internet customer for 11+ yrs at same location), I have seen DNS issues... whenever I would see 'looking up host' in my browser, I would change my DNS setting from DHCP to 'Use specific...' and use 4.1.1.1, since I know this is a publicly available DNS that was VERY reliable (plus its easy to remember).

 

I usually use that to ping and/or tracert whenever my service seems laggy or non-existent.

 

I'll admit that using this DNS was first tried a LONG time ago... perhaps I use try a different one (maybe 8.8.8.8)?  Or is the 75.75.75.75 reliable enuff to use?

 

Sorry for the questions... Im not home right now, so its hard to test... Kiddies just informed me that the 'internet is SLOW'... I'll do more debugging when I get home.

 

I have both windows and linux machine at home... hopefully, I can resolve the slowness.

Give 'em all a try. That Google offering as well as the OpenDNS offerings. YMMV (Your Mileage may vary)..

 

Maybe something else is going on like general RF connection quality issues ? Post your modem's signal stats if you like ? Get 'em here; http://192.168.100.1

Are you still seeing a problem? I'm nearby (I sometimes use your post office, but it's awkward with the construction). I'm seeing reasonable response times, but it's several hours later.

seems it may be connection issue from street...

 

here are my numbers:

  SNR: 32.5 dB

  Frequency: 21.0 MHz

  Power Level: 40.7 dBmV

  Received Signal Strength: 6.1 dBmV

  Bit Error Rate: 5.73%

 

Most #s stay  the same except for the SNR fluxuates between 26.2 and 32.7

and the Received Signal strength between 5.8 and 6.2

 

Ideas?

I'd at least call it in to Comcast to let them know you're having problems. We're mostly customers here. With all this rain, maybe something got wet. Or some critter nibbled it.


Other people here are better at interpreting the numbers, so I'll leave that to them. They might like to know about any splitters you have. Are you seeing similar numbers whether or not you have your router connected?

That is definitely a problem. The forward SNR should never be lower than 33dB let alone such wide variations. It seems that there are intermittent noise ingress issues on your line.

called comcast... will be out sunday (arg - seems like a long wait)... I have one splitter then cable modem, then router.

 

lines are 11+ yrs old... maybe wetness.

comcast came... and went... gentleman said 'all things good in yer house and to street - must be something upstream... I'll put in service call... should be better in 48hrs"

 

Well, while I have had no drops this past week, I still notice fluxuations in the SNR: between 29 and 32.And my connection seems slow.

 

And worse, using a few speed test tools i get:

 

http://my.verizon.com/micro/speedtest/broadband/# :  down: 2.25 Mbps, up:1.59 Mbps

http://testmy.net/ : down: 2.65 Mbps

 

Bottom line - any suggestions on next steps?
