Select program from TV listing .  push record and always get error message.. Cannot not record.

Are you trying to use your smartphone to set-up a recording to your home's dvr?

Yes,  if we want to reco;rd a program  on our Xfinity DVR from our Smartphone  we get an error message and can't record the program...
