I have been able to connect to local channels of national networks on my paid HD subscription. Xfinity connect says I have to go to wifi  to watch

Hello shuffle3, do you get an error message that's say you must be connected to your "In Home Network"? If so there is nothing wrong with the app, just the content that you're trying to view can only be watched while connected to your home Wi-Fi. Not all content is this way but most live content such as games and other live TV shows will prompt you to be connected to your home Wi-Fi for licensing reasons.

There are over 200 live channels to watch from anywhere in the USA (filter by "Available out of home" in "Live TV" to see just these channels).  When connected to your in-home XFINITY network, you will have access to your full channel lineup.  Some programmers don't make their streams available out of home. Local broadcast is actually hundreds of individual affiliate stations, which is the reason these are typically not available out of home (securing rights is...challenging).
