Comcast to Launch YouTube on Xfinity X1

Comcast and Google yesterday announced the nationwide launch of YouTube on Xfinity X1, giving viewers quick, easy access to YouTube’s vast online video collection alongside the live, on demand, DVR and other web programming that is already included with their Xfinity TV subscription. YouTube content will be accessible via the X1 voice remote and YouTube videos will be featured throughout Xfinity on Demand. 

 

YouTube’s online videos will be featured throughout the Xfinity On Demand menu and available in the YouTube app, providing easy access to trending videos and complementing existing movie, show, music, news, and celebrity content screens on X1 and supplementing thematic destinations. 

 

Featuring universal voice control with the X1 voice remote, customers can also access YouTube content by:  

  • Simply saying "YouTube" to launch the app. 

  • Searching for topical videos by saying, "YouTube, show me make-up tutorials," or "Find party dip recipes on YouTube."  

  • Calling up trailers, clips, and more related to movies, TV shows or celebrities by saying, "Watch ‘Carpool Karaoke’ on YouTube," or "Show me clips from ‘Empire’ on YouTube."  

  • Saying, "Find live streams from Coachella on YouTube," or "YouTube, show me performances from the 2017 Grammy’s" to watch or browse clips of live event feeds.  

Current X1 and YouTube signed-in customers can readily access their personalized settings and subscriptions when accessing YouTube on X1.  In addition to finding YouTube content with the X1 voice remote and within Xfinity On Demand, customers can just launch the YouTube app located in the Apps and Networks sections of X1.

How does YouTube on XFINITY X1 work?

  • X1 customers can access YouTube in the Apps and Networks sections of X1, and via featured YouTube content that will be integrated throughout XFINITY On Demand.
  • For the first time, YouTube viewers will enjoy universal voice control with the X1 voice remote and be able to access YouTube content.
  • X1 customers will be able to browse and access YouTube’s massive collection of digital content, including gaming videos, eSports content, music clips, fitness videos, daily vlogs from YouTube creators, entertainment clips, and real-time trending news, sports and viral videos.
  • Current X1 and YouTube customers will also have the ability to sign in when accessing YouTube on X1 and readily access their personalized settings and subscriptions.

What apps are available are what is listed in the apps menu.

 

If you have a smart TV that has a youtube app, then that has nothing to do with the Comcast box.

If the OP has a smart TV, it may have YouTube pre-installed.  Of course, that would be controlled by the TV remote, not X1.

What are you seeing after that???

I get an error message APPS 04154 and nothing further. Not sure exactly what this means. 

YouTube might be getting away from their "app" (Samsung recently deleted the YouTube app, Panasonic and Roku still have it) and need in some cases we to access YouTube using a web browser.

I don't recall any announcements from Comcast about apps.

Will this support casting/control from mobile devices?  Our Youtube timne is spent going through videos in the Subscribed list and selecting the ones we are interested in as a large playlist.  Maintaining this level of control, while the main screen continues to play, would go a long way to make us not need our Chromecast anymore.

Until Comcast comes out with a X1 cable-box capable of 4K, those of us with Ultra High Definition televisions will have to access You Tube through the You Tube app on our smart televisions to watch 4K videos currently on You Tube.

 

Their current X1 boxes cannot output 4K streaming videos. Many HD videos, on You Tube, are 1080p (Blu-Ray) which we current view that way on our UHD televisions. It may be possible for some X1 boxes with 1080p output to support Blu-Ray but we need someone from Comcast to confirm if this is, or will be possible.

 

I would think the Xi5 box would be able to handle the HDR videos I find and watch through the regular You Tube app.

YouTube will be a fantastic addition to X1, but there are Two issues that Comcast could be helpful in convincing YouTube to address.

 

#1, There is a vast store of YouTube "stuff" that is low to very low definition.  YouTube has actually made this situation worse by making users think that "Up Converting" to produce HD resolution is worth while.  Clearly, this is not the case and a significant amount of YouTube material is going to be unwatchable on modern TVs.  Now is the time for YouTube to educate the public to submit HD resolution and to segregate all the low resolution into a seperate catagory that can easily be filtered out.

 

#2, There is suddenly a barage of YouTube videos showing up with software generated speech.  If the submitter is incapable of speaking the required English language, then it is of no interest to me. I for one, will not view this undesirable material and a filter should be provided to eliminate it as well.

Based on the Roku app timeline, I expect a beta version sometime in late January 2018, with a fee to be determined later.

When we first switched from Verizon to Comcast YouTube was clearly available on the apps screen. I'm not sure when it disappeared, but I was able to watch ch YouTube videos on my regular old Vizio smart tv. So it was there Comcast. Why was it removed?

perhaps you are remembering Facebook (pictures) and Instagram (photos) apps?

At this time there are no plans for a YouTube Kids app being launched. We are preparing for the debut of a traditional YouTube App to be released soon.

You should suggest to Comcast execs that they create and rent out a box like the old WebTV system where we can surf the net on our tvs with wireless keyboards and such. Possibly even watch tv AND surf the net at the same time via picture-in-picture or split-screen technology.

Comcast still has to negotiate with all content suppliers to gain permission to stream the content.

Rolling out probably refers to software/firmware updates; the X1 boxes get updated in "batches" (by region?).  I doubt they would try to push out the update to EVERY X1 box in one night.
