I can't record shows even though I have the apps installed on my phone and am being charged for X1.

do you have a DVR in your home? (an xg1). all but one model has a clock on the front.

Hello belshome. In order to be able to record shows using X1 and our XFINITY Stream app, you must have a DVR box with DVR service. As Rustyben had asked, do you have this service? If you're not sure, I can check your account. I'll just need you to send me a private message with your account info.
