Problems watching espn online

Background: IE 7.0 (and don't tell me to upgrade)

                     Firefox 12

                     Windows xp os

Steps taken:

1. Went to http://espn.go.com/watchespn/getaccess

2. Typed zip code choose your provider

3. Click here to watch your favorite espn sports and show.

4. Next I chose any of the live now what is on the list.

When doing this I get stuck in a endless loop and to stop this I have to exit out of the browser.

Here is another step I tried to see if it works.

1. Went to http://espn.go.com/watchespn/getaccess

2. Clicked watch now

3. Chose isp provider

4. Next it ask me comcast username and password

5. Next I chose any of the live now what is on the list.

When doing this I get stuck in a endless loop and to stop this I have to exit out of the browser.

I went to http://espn.go.com/watchespn/ then clicked on Watch Now near the upper right and logged in with my Comcast.net login and password. I don't need to login anymore as my credentials are recognized. I am using Internet Explorer 8.

My suggestion is to call us at 1-800-XFINITY to check on and verify your Comcast User ID.You may need to change or reset your password.

You can do that here: http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/account/changing-or-resetting-your-password

Otherwise, ESPN has a dedicated contact phone number to help any customer that is having trouble with their app: 1-888-549-ESPN (3776) (from 8am – 1am EST)..

Hello,

Well I already called that number to get some help but as usual they pass the buck back to comcast and comcast pass the buck back to them.

It is like a ping pong game no help no support. Is anyone else able to watchespn online.

I am signed in to comcast.

When you click to watch it sends my browser into a loop. Which is weird because i can still watch espn3 programming without a problem.

Re: Problems watching espn online

Clicked that link and got this

There was an error loading the player (code312)

When clicking on the last link for specials/sports, i can view the other videos such as athletes on dave letterman.

Is there a special plugin that watchespn requires? I have no problem watching any other videos.

Re: Problems watching espn online

I had the same problems (looping on espn and the 312 error on the comcast links) using Google Chrome:

To fix it enable third party cookies and use this site: http://espn.go.com/watchespn/getaccess and choose comcast. (to note comcast isn't available as an option on the other login site.)

To enable third party cookies on chrome:

Click on the wrench in the top left

 Click Settings

 Click Content Settings

Uncheck "Block third-party cookies and site data"

You may need to refresh or reopen chrome for settings to take affect.

Re: Problems watching espn online

I've got the same problem on my Linux (Ubuntu) computer with Chromium.  I can watch ESPN3 shows without any problem.  On my Windows 7 laptop with Chromium, I do not have this problem and can watch any channel (AFAIK, haven't tested everything).

I tried to track the sequence of events, and here's what I see.  I go to watchespn.com, and am redirected to http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index.  I click on the link to watch SportsCenter on ESPN, and it loads a

page that appears to be authenticating something (the exact URL changes each time, I believe):

https://sp.auth.adobe.com/adobe-services/1.0/authenticate?mso%5Fid=Comcast%5FDisney&requestor%5Fid=E...

From there, it immediately loads another page, this time a comcast address (again, the URL changes each time):

https://idp.comcast.net/idp/pxh59/resumeSAML20/idp/SSO.ping?response=1&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fsp.auth...

Both of those pages (the adobe and the comcast addresses) appear to be blank - nothing displays in the browser.

Then it opens this address:

http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/channel/espn/launchPlayer/true

This re-loads the initial WatchESPN page, and then the cycle begins again without any user interaction - sp.auth.adobe.com, idp.comcast.net, then http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/channel/espn/launchPlayer/true.  That goes on until I close the browser tab.

I've tried deleting all the comcast, xfinity, adobe, and espn cookies.  The fix above about unblocking third-party cookies didn't help me (mine were already unblocked).

Here are my system specs:

Joe - I'm not sure what you are talking about, I'm sorry.  I was using the WatchESPN app on my iPad....that said, I just tried www.espn3.com and have the same problem, I can access ESPN3 product but not ESPN or ESPN2.

Re: Problems watching espn online

Okay, I found what you are talking about on the Xfinity site and can watch ESPN and ESPN2 on that using the links while logged in...so I guess its an espn3.com and WatchESPN app issue?  I'll try giving them a call I guess?

Re: Problems watching espn online

I'm having similar problems where either my ESPN3 page goes into a loop,

or it constantly asks for me to select the provider over and over again.

This all started happening after a system upgrade on my Linux box, which included Firefox.

Prior to that it was working fine.

Is there some broweser setting I need to change? I already allow 3rd party cookies.

Re: Problems watching espn online

jw, this is the exact issue I am having on my Ubuntu Linux.  I experience the same problem in Chrome as well - appears to be a flash issue.

Re: Problems watching espn online

Ok, since nobody answered this clearly - as Comcast stated above, Linux not supported (by ESPN either). As to the weird login loop (and I'm rather disappointed in the Comcast technical help here), in addition to disabling Adblock and Ghostery (etc.) Comcast is utilizing "ping tracking" to determine who you are. In my case I had A Better Privacy set to disable ping tracking (which I advocate under normal circumstances). I noticed as the Comcast URL kept flashing by that it contained a ping command, and the repeat loop for a given number of tries is sypmtomatic of pinging behavior. So, as soon as I enabled ping tracking it worked fine - no more loop. Ensure that ping tracking is enabled in your browser, and Windows and Mac users lemme know if that solves your concern.

Re: Problems watching espn online

Someone please explain to me how this has been solved, two days ago I got the dreaded key telling me I am not an espn subscriber. I can go to the links and watch the channels but how do I fix the watchespn page?

I spent 2.5 hours on  the phone with comcast last night and was told this is not a known issue, same with talk with espn. Called the both this am to point out this thread, emailed to cory at espn. Someone please just tell me how to fix the watch espn web page.

Thanks, Mike

Re: Problems watching espn online (**Real Solution**)

The "solution" of changing browser settings, such as cache or cookies, might relate to some of these issues but is not likely the case in many others.

The cause of repeated prompting for the service provider, the start of this thread, is  best identified by NURGLE's posting.  In that case, the problem was resolved by removing a Privacy filter (software setting) that was blocking a PING during the Comcast validation/authentication process from WATCHESPN.

The blocked PING can also be caused by Firewall setting on a 'smart firewall' such as a LinkSys or other router, as well as software Firewalls on individual machines.  The failure occurs when the LOGIN to Comcast from WATCHESPN goes to "idp.comcast.net" which is likely "ID Proofing" for your login credentials.  The string includes a ticket (certificate) of your credentials as well as a Single-signon Ping to detect spoofing (SSO.PING).  If the validation PING back doesn't make it, then Comcast assumes it was faked or spoofed.  Whoops, no validation and you get the prompt again to enter your service-provider.

So...check any software or routers that act as a Firewall/Privacy settings.  Turn off the firewall-filters just to test to see if that corrects your problem (in particular any setting that is enabled related to Privacy or PING filtering).  Good luck.

Re: Problems watching espn online (**Real Solution**)

This is interesting reading on the authentication process and why it is needed and also why it is complex (note that Comcast is listed as a 'pingidentity' customer):

https://www.pingidentity.com/blogs/pingtalk/index.cfm/2010/1/25/TV-Everywhere--Its-An-Authentication...

New Poster

Re: Problems watching espn online (**Real Solution**)

Didn't change a thing, this morning was sending me in the loop, this afternoon its working fine which can only lead me to believe that this is a comcast or espn issue. I had an open ticket with comcast which they promised a response by Friday, well its Tuesday and no response. This is typical of their customer service.

I don't know what else to do as even the squeaking wheel is ignored. Just a bad company to do business with from a customer service stand point.

Regular Visitor

Re: Problems watching espn online (**Real Solution**)

It is possible that the source of the problem that causes the repetitive login-to-service-provider is a configuration issue within ESPN (WATCHESPN) or Comcast but it seems like that would cause widespread outages rather than individual ones.

To the earlier point, most modern firewalls are adaptive and dynamic, i.e. 'smart firewalls'.  They are typically default-configured to block a known IP address (a server) when a series of PINGS (PING Flood) occurs.  If a different IP address is incurred, such as a different Comcast authentication server, then the initial PINGS would work and so would authentication.

This means that a firewall PING filter might allow access if a new server is encountered in the authentication process.  This could happen if there is more than one Comcast authentication server that a device can encounter during a LOGIN (which is a very likely scenario).  Eventually that authentication server will also be blocked if the threshold is reached, i.e. five, ten or whatever number of PINGS from that IP/Server source.

It is worthwhile to check software firewalls (Windows, Norton, ZoneAlarm, etc.), router/network firewalls (like LinkSys, DD-WRT, etc.), or software privacy settings if the looping-login problem does comes up for someone on the Forum.

Re: Problems watching espn online (**Real Solution**)

This started happening for me about 2-3 weeks ago. I have changed no software, been on the phone with both comcast and espn. Both are reporting others with same issue. Now its hit and miss with me, so once again how can this be my computer?

Re: Problems watching espn online

It seems I finally resolved this through enabling third party cookies for various sites:

I am running Chrome 31 on Mac OS X 10.9.1.

Go into Chrome > Settings > Show advanced settings > Content Settings > Manage Exceptions (under Block third-party cookies and site data) > Add exceptions for the following:

[*.]comcast.net

[*.]xfinitytv.comcast.net

[*.]nbcsports.com

[*.]espn.go.com

[*.]espn.com

[*.]adobe.com

I was also having the same issue for streaming from nbcsports.com. This fixed that problem too. It appears that xfinity uses a third-party redirect authentication system that needs permission from Chrome to work.

Hope that fixes your issue!

Re: Problems watching espn online

The issue is with those lousy cheating lying cable providers like comcast. I was having issues on laptop, contacted comcast and they said unauthorized, needing a package. The error was

"Unfortunately, this network is not included in your current XFINITY TV service"

working with comcast was a debacle. over 3 hours 5 chat sessions and they say its not included, you need an extra package but could never get what package was REALLY needed. From their own web page it is clearly stated that it is included.

http://customer.xfinity.com/help-and-support/cable-tv/what-is-espn3/ and the paragraph

How to Get ESPN3

You need to have an XFINITY Internet subscription (any level of service) or have an XFINITY TV package that includes the ESPN channel to get ESPN3.

I have both a internet sub and digital package that has espn. This is clearly a violation of espn3 I would think also, trying to milk more money out of customers from comcast. REVOLT, call comcast and tell them contact espn and complain. No other cable provider I have had needed extra money to have access to espn3 on my laptop and I have had 4 others. This is why comcast is awful and their customer service is even worse.

Apologies, I believe that I see the issue. Your e-mail address is tied to two separate accounts in our system which may be causing a conflict.

I will send you a PM (Private Message) to verify and get some additional information so that we can get this resolved. Thanks for your patience.

At the top of each Forum page you will see a small envelope. This is the icon for Private Messages, referred to as ‘PM’s’. A Private Message is a way to communicate in private, to another User, Moderator, or Administrator out of public view in the Forums.

The envelope icon will have a number next to it if you have any new messages waiting.

To open a PM to read it, double click on the envelope. If you click on the envelope a window will open with tabs for your Private Message Inbox, Sent Messages, Friends, Ignored Users, and Compose new Message. You can also access this area by clicking on the Username in a Thread or post. By default, Private Messages are enabled. You can disable this feature in My Settings>Preferences> Private Messenger.

Re: Problems watching espn online

It shouldn't be Comcasteds, It should be AWESOMETEDS!!! It is amazing when you get the following from support

1) A real honest person that wants to help rather than someone that spews how they want to help but then have you repeat your problem and they read from a script rather than use logical thinking

2) A real troubleshooter that wants to take the time to solve your issue rather than get graded on how quickly they close your case or call

3) Someone that understands their own policies and products

Ted (I am asuming that is his name) surpassed all 3. Kudos to him wish comcast had more like him. I spent 5 hours numerous chats and phone calls and kept getting re-directed and kept telling me espn3 was not part of my package. When it clearly states on their site if you have comcast internet or any tv package with espn you do.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect comcast outsources and offshores a part of its support and customer service. And while it maybe cheaper in the short term it is not in the long term considering the frustration it costs customers, the reputation the support gets and the amount of customers it loses. I was very close to calling up a competitor to switch providers because it is easier to deal with. I wish more companies would learn the lesson that you get what you pay for and cheaper isn't better and hire qualified people that can think and analyze rather than just read from a script. And if it isn't in that script, they CAN'T help. Bring it back to people that can use the jobs and can understand the language and product
