Extending Recording Time

When I set up a recording for a sport program (football, for example) the text on the screen says the recording time will be automatically extended if the program runs longer than its scheduled time. However watching Monday Night Football and the recording stopped with 5 minutes still left on the game clock. Did I misunderstand?

I have learned that I have to record the next program after MNF in case it goes over its timeslot.

Thank you. But why doesn't this feature work as advertised? Is the work-around of recording the following program requiired for all sporting events or just MNF?

You  should manually record sporting events (max 7 hrs)

Auto extend is just not reliable as the system doesn't know where to end the program if it runs late given the default option for auto extend.
