Android Xfinity TV Player - Permissions

Count me as another one that is happy to finally see this app published.
I do have a question though, why does this app need the following permission?

Directly call phone numbers
Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention.

Just what phone calls would it need to be making?

Thank you,
Earl

Re: Android Xfinity TV Player - Permissions

earl,

Here's an explanation of the permissions requested in the app.  Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.

* permission.CALL_PHONE - Allows us to pass our support phone number to your dialer.
* permission.INTERNET - Access the Internet.
* permission.READ_PHONE_STATE - We use the ID of your phone to prevent playback abuse.
* permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE - We tune playback if you are on WiFi.
* permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE - We detect connectivity before allowing playback.
* permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE - We cache browse images to your sdcard to save your bandwidth.
* permission.WAKE_LOCK - We prevent your device from sleeping during playback.

Re: Android Xfinity TV Player - Permissions

Another quesion on access levels requested by the App.

I have it installed on a rooted Galaxy Tab 10.1, with SuperUser installed. When I start up the Xfinity TV Player, I get a pop-up stating it has been granted root access. Why does it even ask for root access if it is designed to work on non-rooted devices?

Re: Android Xfinity TV Player - Permissions

kevj, the root permissions request is actually part of a legacy of security features in some of the 3rd party code being used in the app.  We're working to have that removed from the code base and will roll out a patch release at that time.  In the meantime, you can dismiss the dialog and deny the root access and the app will work just fine.

Hope this helps.

Eric,

Thank you for the reply and the list of what the required permissions are used for in the app.
