Wireless Digitial Voice + Corless Phone = Tapping sound

Hi all,

I have Comcast Digital Voice, a wireless router, and a cordless phone.  Unfortunately, the cordless phone must be plugged in to the Comcast modem, which must be next to the wireless router.  This proximity of wireless router and cordless phone causes a tapping sound when I am talking on the phone.  It is very annoying.  The tapping sound goes away when I turn the wireless modem off.

This seems like a pretty common scenario - how do people work around this?

If I could have Digital Voice go through the phone lines, that would be ideal.  But don't phone jacks need to be next to the modem in order for this to work?

are your phones 2.4ghz? if so get new phones b/c they are conflicting with the router.   Otherwise try and get 6ft between the phone and the router

When you had CDV installed, you could have had Comcast connect it to your home's phone wiring, and then you could plug the phone into any jack. I think it's still possible to do it by connecting the modem to a phone jack, but I'm not exactly sure.

The technician said it would be a lot of work because the phone jack is on the other side of the room.  He convinced me that the modem is fine.

But now I wish he didn't sell me on that - I would really love to have my phone jacks activated!  I wonder if Comcast would still provide this.  It's only been 2 days since my account opened.

I'm sure they'll do it, but they'll probably charge you for the service call. You could also hire an electrician on your own.

Evoluent, get a 5.8GHz phone.

Preferable to get the "newer" dsect 6.0, it is at 1.9 ghz which was recently(?) opened up for telco use; then the 5.8 ghz is probably dropping in price.  Read that the dsect 6.0 @ 1.9 ghz has much better distance usage tho.

Also might try getting a long telephone cord that is long enough to wrap around the room along the base of the walls from the modem to a telephone jack & see how it works.  I've used a 75 foot cord doing that when I has adsl where the phone jack was in another room; still got "good' connection even if everyone  connected to surewest couldn't get anything faster than 384 kbps at that time.

The telephone cord is much cheaper than a service call & Comcast has already changed whatever needed to be changed at the telephone box to your place.  I don't think the tech could setup the eMTA to only use its connection for digital voice, but could be wrong.
