Phone messages going to voice mail even when phone not in use

I noticed lately that some of our phone calls are going to voice mail, even when we are not using the phone.  They should only be going to voice mail if we are on the phone.  Yesterday, three phone messages went to voice mail instead of the answering machine which is the primary source for missed calls and my husband swears he wasn't on the phone all day long.  What is causing this?  And how can I remedy it?

I have an answering machine which I prefer to use over voice mail.  Please explain to me how to stop the voice mail entries.   Dan6139

I would also like to turn off voice mail so that the answering machine in my home could be used.  Also how do I get to the old messages that have gone to voice mail?

set the comcast number rings higher than the answering machine.

How do i change the number of rings before comcast voicemail picks it up. Its at 2 which is not allowing my home answering machine to get the calls.

This should help:

For XFINITY Voice and XFINITY Internet service subscribers:

 

  1. Go to www.xfinity.com.
  2. Select the Email icon.
  3. Enter your primary Comcast ID and password. 
  4. Go to the Preferences tab, then select the VOICE icon.
  5. Select Call Forwarding and Rings.
  6. In the Send call to voice mail after field, select the number of rings you want before the call goes to voice mail.

 

For XFINITY Voice subscribers:

 

  1. Go to www.xfinity.com.
  2. Select the Voicemail icon.
  3. Log into XFINITY Voice using your XFINITY Voice telephone number and current voice mail passcode.
  4. Click Preferences then click Voice Mail. 
  5. Select the number of rings you want before the call goes to voicemail.
  6. Click Save.

 

 

 

While the change is usually immediate, it can take up to 24 hours in a few cases.
