Cannot get personal greeting to play on voice mail, only standard one

After calling in from out of town to check voice mail messages, we realized that our personal greeting has been replaced by a (bad) standard greeting.  We definitely used to have a personal greeting in use.


I went through the options to change our greetings, and am able to update the personal greeting, but am not offered the choice of *using* the personal greeting vs. the standard greeting, so cannot get it to play.


Have an additional problem of not being able to enter the "#" (or "*") while the standard greeting is played, in order to pick up our voice messages remotely.  Not sure if this related, but suspect so.

Turns out the problem was that we had one of our telephone's answering systems turned on by accident, so it was superceding the Comcast/Xfinity voice mail service.  This meant we heard the that machine's standard greeting (with a male voice), and that we couldn't pick up our voice mails remotely (using Comcast/Xfinity methods).  Apparently, the Comcast/Xfinity standard greetings are done with a female voice, so that's a clue that this other answering machine might have been activated.  Sure enough, we had 13 voice mails sitting on this one telephone's base.


This would be nice to have on an FAQ list since the service person I called said this is a common problem.
