Ultra High Definition Sampler App Now Available on Select LG Smart TVs


Effective May 10, 2016, the Ultra High Definition (UHD) Sampler app is now available for download from LG's Smart World on select TV models.


Previously only available on select Samsung Smart TV models, the Ultra HD Sampler app allows XFINITY TV customers to watch select UHD (also known as 4K) content on demand with a high-speed Internet connection. However, the app is not designed to replicate the functionality of a set-top box, and linear channels and guide listings are not available.


The Ultra HD Sampler app allows customers to:

 

-Browse and watch 4K content
-Set Parental Controls
-Enable Closed Captioning
-Manage audio preferences

 

We plan to add more content in the future to bring our customers even more choices. Currently, content features full seasons of the following TV series:

  

Note: Customers must subscribe to a show's channel (or have an XFINITY TV package that includes the channel) in order to watch that TV show.

 

The Ultra HD Sampler app is supported on the following Samsung TV models:

 

2014:
HU8500
HU8550
HU9000
HU8700
HU6830

 

2015:
All UHD models only

 

 

The Ultra HD Sampler app is also currently supported on the following UHD LG TVs, including all 2016 models:

EG9600
UF8600
UF8500
UF7700
UF7690
UF7600
G6, E6, B6 OLED
UH9500
UH8500
UH7700
UH6550
UH6500
UH6150
UH6100

 

Eligible customers must have a primary XFINITY username or a Comcast email address and password. In addition, the customer must:

- Be in a market that offers XFINITY On Demand.
- Have XFINITY TV with XFINITY On Demand service and a Comcast set-top box or CableCARD connected to at least one TV in their home.
- Subscribe to an XFINITY TV package that includes any entitled content (e.g., subscription to USA Network is required to view USA Network content).
- Have Internet service. XFINITY Internet is not required; any Internet Service Provider will work. Any Internet connection that can provide speeds greater than 3 Mbps will work, but higher speeds are recommended for better quality. Streaming content will count toward any monthly Internet data usage quota the customer's Internet Service Provider may have.

Where is the UHD Sampler app for Samsung TV owners?

I have a new Samsung 4K TV and I have read about the UHD Sampler app.  When I access the Samsung oSmartHub, I don't see it (and I also searched).  Did it go away?  Maybe I am doing something wrong...

I have the app on my 2014 Samsung TV. I was able to locate it by going to the Smart Hub & then searching for Xfinity in apps. There are currently 5 shows available.

I have the Samsung UN65JU639D, which is a Black Friday version of the UN65JU650D.

 

I have not checked with Samsung.  I usually have better luck with Xfinity related answers here.  Samsung usually offers a chat service in India and the responses can be canned.  I figured someone here may know.  Thanks

I have a 2015 Samsung smartTV UHD 4K and don't have the app. 

I read that it only appears on 2014 models. 

Per Comcast, they will be a 4K set top box in 2015, but I haven't heard or seen one yet. 

So my question to X1, when will they be available?  And are you going to charge more money for them?

Another thing we learned is that Samsung released a bug in their middleware that prevented search from working correctly. They have a new version that resolves the issue. You will need the updated software version. You'll then be able to find the Sampler by looking under Apps>Videos. Easiest way is to set the sort as Z-A since Ultra HD Sampler will be under U.

UHD Sampler App on LG TV

I have just purchased an LG EF9500 OLED 4k TV. The sampler app does not work on it. Strange for a top of the line TV and all the fanfare of the announcement in this forum.

 

I checked the FAQ and my model is not included, but this makes no sense. The cheaper 2015 4k models work with it (the UFxxxx). The 2016 OLEDs work with it and even the curved version of my TV (probably same firmware) the EG9600 is stated to work with it. What's going on? Why would this model be excluded when almost all of the other LG 4k TVs are included.

UHD sampler App

I have been using the Xfinity Ultra High Definition Sampler App on my Samsung UHD 3D smart TV since the middle of March 2016 without any problems.

 

Xfinity has finally added some new 4K shows and removed a few others. Since this change I tried watching some of the new material.

 

The app loaded fine, the new shows and others showed up normally.

 

The problem occured when choosing a show and clicking "Watch" icon. The download (3 dots blinking) indicator showed as usual but the show never started. Shows normally start with 15 to 60 seconds and stream without problems. I waited up to 15 minutes with nothing happening. I checked different show offerings without luck. I exited app and signed on app again with no luck getting any shows to start and stream.

 

I suspect the updating of programing on the app may have altered the program code for the app.

Yesterday I tried the Comcast "Chat" with the same question. The message that I would be connected shortly never happened after about 30 minutes.

Is the "Chat" working? 

 

I assume the UHD App is only used by a few of us who have a Samsung UHD TV and are even aware of this app. I hope someone from Comcast can address this issue.

Today, 7/5/16, I just got through on the "Chat" line to ask about the UHD App. I would rate the help given by (name withheld) as "F".

 

He tried to tell me the App was discontinued last year in 2015. Nice try since I just got the information for down-loading the UHD App from our local Xfinity office about 3 months ago. I downloaded and watched about 50 episodes of 4K programing over the last 3 months with absolutely no problems.

 

The app just recently in last few weeks had new episodes added, and a few others removed. The app no longer functions correctly. I have owned and programed computers since 1979. It is rather obvious the a programer messed up the operation of the app.

 

I hope someone from Comcast with real knowledge of the company's computer operations can give me a correct answer to the current situation.

I just viewed more Xfinity information about the UHD sampler app and found some stating LG Tv's from 2016 also work with the app. So the app still exists and is being used at this time.

 

Any other owners of UHD TV's been using this app recently?

Today I deleted the version of the app I had in my Samsung TV memory. Then used the search function for locating apps not found in the TV's recomended list. I took a about 4 trys to get the name of the app right "Ultra HD Sampler". I down-loaded the app and found it to be the same version as the one deleted.

 

So no luck in getting it to work. I did this to eliminate the posibility of a corrupted file from using the original down-load.

I am pleased to inform you that my Samsung UHD TV just got another update (2nd since January 2016) this morning, 7/14/16.

 

I just tested the UHD Sampler App and it it functioning normally now. The update may have fixed an incompatibility issue for using the app.

I can now watch a chosen episode on the UHD Sampler app ONLY if I refrain from pushing any controls on my remote unit the episode finishes playing and returns to the Sampler app menu.

 

All streaming video apps require the use of my Samsung UHD TV remote which has about 20% of the buttons found on the Xfinity remote. Running "On Demand" on cable using the Xfinity remote always works trouble free.

 

The basic problem I found with this app is that the control codes using by the computer are not the same as my Samsung remote. Evidently commands like: Pause, Stop, Resume, etc. do not function. The error traping used in the program code is insufficient and the program bombs. No picture except for Srreaming icon symbol (3 blinking dots).

 

I suspect this problem is the cause of many complaints found on other streaming video apps. I can currently live with the problem by leaving the remote along until the choosen episode finishes.

UHD sampler

Hi, owin

 

I am now unable to watch content on the UHD sampler.  The app just shows 3 blinking lights after the episode is selected.  This started about a month ago.  Prior to that time, I could watch the 4K content. 

 

I have a Samsung 4k TV.

If you have a 2015 Samsung UHD TV there should have been an update a day or two ago. Check your TV and update it.

 

The app should work if you chose an episode to watch one. You need a broadband of 15 Mbps (12 works for me on DSL with only the wife's HD Kindle on line). The app should start playing in about 15 to 30 seconds.

 

Do not mess with any buttons on the Samsung remote while waiting. Some control codes not compatible with Xfinity remote and can bomb the app. See my post on the UHD Sampler App from about 2 weeks ago.

I just used the UHD sampler app in the last 30 minutes.

 

The app worked correctly locating an episode and clicking "watch" to play it. Download timer took about 15 to 30 seconds before showing warning that some functions would not operate during the playing of the episode. The episode started playing about 5 second later.

 

Do not mess with the remote until the show finishes and returns to the menu.

I just found out today that running the Samsung UHD TV in "Sports Mode" (doubles the screen refresh rate) does not allow the down-loading (streaming) video to keep up. So we now end up with the 3-dot symbol and either a froze picture or the episode never starting. I hadn,t paid attention to this in the past since when using You Tube in streaming 4k video it did not matter.

 

You tube utilizes are larger buffer and programing of the app to account for newer TV's.

 

I switched the TV back to standard mode (60HZ) and the UHD Sampler App worked fine.

I ran into one of the things that can cause the app to freeze or never load (3 dots blinking and no show).

 

The Samsung UHD TV cannot be used in "Sports Mode" which doubles the refresh rate (120HZ versus 60HZ in standard mode).

 

Not all apps using streaming video are not created equal. When viewing 4K video on You Tube no problems occur at either refresh rate.

 

I now know that the UHD Sampler app is not programed and utilizing a large enough buffer to handle the newer televisions that can speed up the refresh rate.

 

The app worked fine when put the TV back on standard fresh rate, and brought back the app to watch the episode that just failed.

After writing the post, I became able to download the 4K episodes. I also downloaded an update from Samsung that may or may not have had anything to do with the resolution.

My fingers are crossed for release of the 4K set-top box soon. That would give more programming options. However, the last tech indicated that it will be a while to reach Tallahassee.

I have been expirimenting with the UHD Sampler App this morning.

 

This time I left my Xfinity (Cisco RNG 150N) cable box turned off.

 

I watched a few episode's of 4K programs without any problems. The small Samsung remote functioned correctly on play/pause button. I was also able to used fast forward function at different speeds and then continue the episode without a problem.

 

I seems that if the cable box is turned on the compatibility issues are between the cable remote and Samsung remote (Samsung TV related).

 

Our Samsung TV's do not require the cable box to be turned on. All programing interactions are through the TV + Internet (DSL in my case) + Comcast Computer. The UHD Sampler app was down-loaded to our TV's and resides in the TV's memory.

 

The app seems to function fine if you leave the cable box turned off while using the app.

I guess I should be happy the app is still functioning. To stream 4K programing it requires by far more broadband and speed.

 

The majority of Comcast's (and all their competition for that matter) problems is related to advertising for more customers and the inability to increase broadband service fast enough to keep the system running reliably.

 

Even this forum came grinding to a halt for while yesterday.

Ultra HD Sampler

The "Ultra HD Sampler" app has been in use since early 2016. I found out about the app from the local Xfinity service center Richfield MN.

 

The app was originally set up to work on Samsung UHD TV's (mainly all 2015 models, or 8000 & 9000 series 2014 models).

 

To find the app click on the SMART HUB button on the remote.  Click the recommended apps icon. Go to the right end of the listed icons to find SEARCH icon. Type in "Ultra HD Sampler". Be careful typing or search will fail. You click to view app information on app before down-loading to TV memory.

 

To use the app your current cable box (I have a Xfinity Cisco RNG150N cable box) needs to be plugged in but the app functions better with the cable box off. I set my TV to "Dynamic" mode before turning on the app. Do not use "Sports" mode since higher refresh rates can over-fill the app's buffer and bomb the app.

 

While using the app it is best to watch an episode without messing with the remote until show ends and returns to the app menu. The PLAY/PAUSE button on remote will work with the cable box OFF, but bombs the app if used while the cable box is turned on. This may be a Samsung HUB problem since it activates the Xfinity remote. Control codes on Samsung and Xfinity remote are not compatible.

I forgot to point out that I have been using this app for 3 months and watched about 50 shows in 4K before the app quit working after they finally added news shows, and removed some I had already watched.

 

I posted about 2 weeks ago about the problem which evidently may have been fixed by a Samsung update on my TV. Since the app now works well enough maybe I should list this post fixed since it mainly was posted to let others know it now exists and works. I have watched about 20 shows in the last week.

Ultra HD Sampler app for Samsung UHD TV (2015 or newer)

This post is basicly for those of us lucky enough to have apps being created for watching ultra high defenition television.

 

Comcast has created the "Ultra HD Sampler" currently working on our model of TV's. It is not found in the featured list so use the search function at end of featured apps to locate and load the app (Ultra HD Sampler). Use of the app only a Comcast HD capable cable box (X1 not required) plus high broadband internet (Comcast, DSL, or other @ 12 to 15 Mbp's minimum) plus a certain level of Comcast cable service.

 

I have been using the app for about 4 months now with good success. It should be noted that when they are working on the app the app will allow you on but fail to start to show any picked episode. Just check back later.

 

Comcast Teds replied yesterday on a separate post that we will see a entry on the Ultra HD Sampler app for "Rio Olympics" for 4K (and some HDR) television broadcasts in a replay version 24 hours after original telecast. I assume that means seeing the about around start of Olympics (or next day).

 

We also have another app which was added yesterday for "PGA Championship" created for our model TV's (no connection to Comcast).

 

We seem to be the test bed for telecasting UHD television for Comcast and others. Otherwise: I find You Tube the best source for reliable UHD television. You need to learn how to navigate and search for a large amount of 4K content. Using the app is free unless you want to join to add your own content and have an easier time using the app.

I was able to switch my TV to "Sports Mode", 120 Hz, without problems while using the PGA Championship app on live broadcast (4k) without bombing the app.

 

Comcast has fixed the "Ultra HD Sampler" since yesterday. I don't know if that app can handle "Sports Mode" yet.
