remote will not change channels

can not change channels with my remote.  New Batteries installed.  Will turn on and off, volumn up and down.

What can I do?

What is the cable box brand and model number? If for a full set top box, can you change cable channels if you first press and release the CABLE button? Which remote do you have (see http://customer.comcast.com/Pages/HelpNFC.aspx?print=false&id=remotes)? Did it ever work?
