RE: help with dvr purchase that is compatible with comcast

TiVo.

I retuned all our Comcast set top boxes about a year ago.  Replaced the main DVR with a TiVo Roamio. Six tuners and 150 hours of storage.  Then put a TiVo Mini in the kitchen and bedroom.  The Mini allows you to play anything live or recorded from the TiVo Roamio.

The TiVo equipment does require a monthly fee, but it's less than the total I had been paying Comcast for their set top boxes.  And you'll need to get a CableCard from your local Comcast office.  The CableCard goes in the TiVo Roamio and requires a phone call to set-up/activate.

Highly recommended...one of the best purchasing decisions I ever made.

To be fair, I wouldn't expect Comcast to recommend a competitor's products.

If you move to TiVo equipment, be aware that it's sometimes problematic getting a good, working CableCard from your local Comcast office.  I went through four to get two good, working CableCards.  This has happened to many others too.

Then, once you have a good, working CableCard -- there's a chance the firmware on the card will need to be updated.  If this happens to you, post a note here to ComcastTeds (there's an existing message thread) and he'll push the firmware to your card.  You'll know you need updated firmware if only four or five of the six tuners can tune to a channel.

Don't let these CableCard issues hold you back -- they're only a bump in the road.  Easily overcome.
