In some (most?) markets you'll get whacked with a $10/month additional outlet fee for any full cable box beyond the first, whether SD or HD.

They also have non-DVR full-featured cable boxes. You have to pay for them, but not the higher price for HD or DVR.

There is a box called a DTA, that is capable of receiving limited/basic as well as Digital Starter (extended basic) channels.  It outputs an RF 'analog' signal to your TV as channel 3 (or 4), and does not do ONDEMAND or have a program menu.  All services I have seen show this as being free for the first two.
