Comcast MPEG 4 does not work with Windows Media Center w/CableCard

Ever since Comcast started switching their systems to MPEG 4, it no longer works with Windows Media Center (WMC). When first tuning a channel, many channels only have audio and a black screen for video. You have to stop the tuner or restart WMC to view and hear the channel.

Comcast subscribers across the country have the same issue, regardless of the type of computer hardware used. I have verified all the 3 Windows PC's I use have MPEG 4 compliant hardware.

When will Comcast fix this problem?

Here we are almost 3 months later and no reply from Comcast.

Wouldn't you just need to install the proper .mp4 codec?

my solution is to tune to an OTA channel (FOX) that isnt MPEG4 - and then to the MPEG 4 channel

it seels to clear it up and work for me

not the ideal solution though

Re: Comcast MPEG 4 does not work with Windows Media Center w/CableCard

Windows Media Center has a correct MPEG4 codec. Other cable companies using MPEG4 with CableCard users do not have any issues.

Other devices using Comcast MPEG 4 with CableCard users do not have any issues.

Hello Bill, this is Ken H from the Detroit area, who used to post and was the HDTV Moderator at AVS Forum.

Yes, switching to an OTA channel and then back to MPEG4 channel does let you tune but it's extremely inconvenient. Further, about 1 of 8 times I tune to an MPEG4 channel it completely locks the tuner up and I have to restart WMC to view anything.

Re: Comcast MPEG 4 does not work with Windows Media Center w/CableCard

The only other device a CableCard can be used with is a TiVo, so of the two CableCard options one of them is crippled.

Other cablecos use MPEG4 and they have no such problem. This is a specific Comcast MPEG4 implementation problem, one that has been known about and discussed online for well over a year, and they have not addressed the issue.
