Comcast DVR to DVD/VHS recorder to HDTV hookup

Is it possible to hook up a Comcast DVR to a DVD/VHS recorder to an HDTV so that the DVR can record one cable channel while the DVD recorder is recording a different cable channel using ity's own tuner?  Here's what I've tried:

Option #1:

  • cable outlet to the "rf in" on the dvd/vhs recorder
  • "rf out" on the dvd/vhs to the "rf in" on the Comcast dvr
  • hdmi form both the dvr and dvd/vhs to the tv

I am able to watch cable tv using the tuner from the dvd/vhs, or by using the dvr by switching the input on my hdtv.  Also, I can record different channels at the same time on the dvd/vhs and the dvr.  ON DEMAND WILL NOT WORK USING THIS SET UP.

Option #2:

  • cable outlet to the "rf in" on the Comcast dvr
  • "rf out" on the Comcast dvr to the "rf in" on the dvd/vhs
  • hdmi form both the dvr and dvd/vhs to the tv

ON DEMAND now works but the tuner on the dvd/vhs no longer works independently.  I have to set the tuner on the dvd/vhs to channel 3 and use the Comcast dvr to select my channels.  I can longer record different channels at the same time since both the dvr and the dvd/vhs have to use the same tuner (dvr).

I realize a splitter should do the trick but I am concerned my signal strength will suffer.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.
