Cable without a box

Is there any way to get cable tv by just attaching the cable wire directly to the tv? Back in the day, you were able to do that without a box and you would just get your basic channels, 2, 4, 5, 7 9, 11 and 13. I called Comcast and of course whoever from wherever (LOL) told me that I needed a box but I'm not sure if they understood what I was asking. I already have cable on my other two smart TV's with HD boxes. This tv is just in a spare bedroom and I don't want to pay monthly for another box in there that rarely gets used. Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Solution
Yes, any live cable outlet needs a cable box of some kind.

Why is this marked "check" as a solution.  The answer given was "no, you can't" do what the person was asking about.
