can I be notified when a sent email is read.  How is this done?

Re: emails

Comcast's Xfinity Connect webmail does not offer this. Email programs offer "read receipts", but they usually depend on the recipient responding OK to some sort of  "notify sender their message was received?" prompt, so they're not all that reliable.

The way the pros do it:

1. Host images on a server under their control.

2. Send HTML email with a reference to one or more images, including an ID unique to each recipient.

When the recipient opens the email, and if they have images turned on, their mail program sends the unique ID and fetches the image from the sender's server, notifying the sender that the message has been opened.

There are services which send email AS images in order to guarantee they will be notified when the recipient fetches the message. For privacy and security reasons, I would never open such an email.
